'Ocean's Twelve' Stars on 'Moral Values'

'Ocean's Twelve' Stars on 'Moral Values' Clooney, Damon, Pitt, Zeta-Jones and More on Hollywood vs. the Heartland Dec. 2, 2004 - In the new film "Ocean's Twelve," a variety of Hollywood A-listers play professionals, each with a special skill, who band together to pull off a gambit none of them could accomplish individually. The film might be seen as a metaphor for real life.

When movie stars come together, they're often recognized as a force to be reckoned with -- and not just at the box office. They're seen collectively as "the Hollywood liberal elite."

Six of "Ocean's" stars -- George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Andy Garcia and Don Cheadle -- recently sat down with ABC News' Diane Sawyer for an exclusive interview about family, fame and public perception.

After one of the most heated presidential campaigns in recent memory, Saywer asked them to reflect on the outcome, the importance of moral values and the idea they are on the opposite side of that dividing line.

"We are, in fact, at times defensive of the idea that there's this disconnect between us and the rest of the country," Clooney said.

"We are actually, all of us, conservative, not liberal, whatever … We are reflections of that society. And we're a product of it."

Movie stars who grew up in Middle American families are troubled by the idea that the country does not think they belong to them.

Pitt grew up in Missouri with an upbringing he describes as "Baptist and then a more nondenominational charismatic kind of movement."

The statistic I heard related to party of registration. I have no problem believing most go GOP in presidential elections.

"We came to America 'cause my father wanted me to enjoy those freedoms."

My grandparents came her from Europe and oppression as well. We enjoy these freedoms too, yup...we enjoy our asses off, Mr. Garcia. We do not STAND AROUND WITH OUR HAND OUT waiting for some other working slob to take care of us or for some so called 'celebrity' to belittle our efforts and ideals while urging the slackers of this society to vote for policies and leaders who will rob us further and further to support themselves. All of us have always worked, that's W O R K. In most cases it was and continues to be physically hard, grinding, ill compensated work...not like standing in front of a camera getting along on our looks and smart alec personalities. You jerks have not seen the last of the backlash you invited with your arrogance and stupidity.

I thought Michael Douglas was a conersavtive?

He is. I have never seen a bigger Conersavtive in my life. A Conersavtive by definition being the composite of:
- A unisexual reproductive structure of gymnospermous plants
- Used to form the comparative degree of adjectives and adverbs: darker; faster.
- Submerged Aquatic Vegetation

But, for those that misread the word, a Conservative he is not.

"The important thing is that you have the ability to express yourself," he said. "I come from a tragedy where you cannot be free. We came to America 'cause my father wanted me to enjoy those freedoms."

Everyone in America has a right to express themselves and live their lives as they wish. What they do not have is the right to force my kids and me to accept and approve of the way they live.

Garcia is a conservative who has never been a part of those voter drives.

And Geena Davis...though folks like that tend to bring to mind a phrase I heard often in boot camp (and even directed at MOI once, lol)...."educated idiots."

I think that sums up nicely. ;)

He supported '41, as did Gloria Estefan (sp?), but both have drifted to the other side.

Good luck with that. Christmastime movie. Whole families will go. Even my husband who goes to only 3-4 movies a year, wants to see that one.

Maybe. But, I have truly had it with those creeps. I am tired of the drivel that passes for entertainment in this country and the foul and depraved image of Americans that these louts make a living perpetuating. Heck, the hatred and disgust the terrorists spew against this country is greatly based on the vicarious view of Americans which is available to them only through the media, since they cannot all have traveled here. If Garcia is not one of them, he was not vocal enough AGAINST THEM. That's all, so I apologize to Garcia, but it's time for these creeps to take a stand just like the rest of us have to do with this. They want it both ways, shame and degrade us but expect our support at the box office. NOT!!!

I thought Michael Douglas was a conersavtive?

No.

From the UN web site:
http://www.un.org/works/goingon/soldiers/michaels_story.html

Douglas co-produced The China Syndrome with Jane Fonda.

His advocacy for social causes did not stop with production of The China Syndrome. In 1991, he founded a non-profit organization called the Michael Douglas Foundation to promote peace and sustainable development.

Anyone taking bets that Michael lives in a "sustainable" housing development, or that any other part of his life style is "sustainable?

It's the same old story, he got his, now we all have to do without.

Michael is a "UN Messenger for Peace".

IIRC he is also an advocate for banning guns in American citizens hands.

What does what an individual was "raised as" mean other than their parents were religious? The point is not what were your parents, but, what are you.

There have always been bad movies. There are plenty of good ones now you just have to know where to look. Just dismissing the entire American film industry like that isn't all that diffrent from people who make knee jerk statements about Christians as 'red necks' and so forth. I cringe either way.

Sounds like they're begging red-staters not to punish them at the box office for their stupidity during the election.

Okay, I forgive Catherine Z-J. But Clooney isn't nearly as easy on the eyes.

BS!! For three weeks in a row I have been looking a the newspaper to find a movie that I can take my mother to see. NOT ONE! TV is no better. I am not a prude, but there are still lots of TV programs which embarrass me. I firmly believe that it is possible to produce successful films without introducing skin, profanity or other vile content...hell, I have rooms full of books which would not embarrass anyone and which you could read till Domesday with out finding any of the disgusting stuff you get from just 5 minutes of TV or the trailer of the latest film. Enough!

Actually, I don't much care what movie stars think about politics. Same for musicians. Only if they go out of their way to disparage my beliefs, then I take exception. For instance, if they insult Bush, it's no big deal. Look at the things we still say about Clinton. But when they go after the voters for being Republican, then that is different. Julia Roberts went on to insult all Republicans. Now that is stupidity on parade. Go ahead and insult 52% of your potential revenue stream. Not too bright. As to Clooney, Pitt, and others: I haven't heard them demean Republicans, just the President, and we do have free speech in this country. We should be glad for that, considering what most of us were saying about the President between 1992-2000. As to the movie, I won't go to the theaters to see it, but will get the DVD. The first one was pretty entertaining.
