LOS ANGELES - For relatives and friends of U.S. troops serving in Iraq, "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" was the place to be. Studio audience members, all with a military connection, were surprised with the gift of a free cruise at a taping Tuesday. The episode of the syndicated talk show, with guest Tom Hanks, aired Wednesday.
A total of 250 seven-day cruises for four, along with taxes and fees, were given in appreciation of troops deployed from three California bases: Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Camp Pendleton and Fort Irwin.
Celebrity Cruises is providing the vacations, available at any time to allow for troops overseas to take part on their return, according to a spokeswoman for the show.
DeGeneres also joined with the USO to send more than 5,000 care packages to the audience's relatives and friends in Iraq. The episode will be repeated on Thanksgiving on the Armed Forces Network.
No good deed goes unpunished? Who knows her motives, (possibly compassion???) matter of fact, who cares? I'm sure those soldiers don't. She's a sweet lady. Finding Nemo anybody?
IF you can recall 'The Ellen De Generes Show,' it was Ellen DeGeneres herself who DEMANDED her show feature her GAY storyline, thus shoving the entire issue down everyone's throats...
Then there was her high-profile flouting her lesbian on various red carpet Hollywood affairs, then the public grew finally to resent her, and her career went down in flames...
And NOW we're to believe she's a philanthropist??
Sorry -- I ain't buying it.
IMO, this is a business stunt.
".....she was a house painter for a time. :-)"
I can see her doing that! I like her, I really like her. I'm glad she's through with being a "shock-mistress", that role never suited her a bit.
Yup. There will be entertainment such as, pin the panties on the terrorist and other great stuff!
You're ugly. I mean on the inside.
"I'm glad she's through with being a "shock-mistress", that role never suited her a bit."
If I remember correctly, she was basically "outed" by the media so perhaps a lot of the "shock" value was more as a result of the media reporting every sordid detail it could find or make up, than anything she did to encourage that image. It was a long time ago so I don;t recall every detail.
One thing I really like about her is that she's not the media whore Oprah is. I can't stand Oprah. Everything about Oprah just screams "elitist".
Why did you say that?
"If I remember correctly, she was basically "outed" by the media so perhaps a lot of the "shock" value was more as a result of the media reporting every sordid detail it could find or make up, than anything she did to encourage that image."
You may well be right about that, I was going to say something like that myself, but as you say, it was a while ago. And hey, let's face it, not the most important thing in the world, despite some of the coverage it got.
Never heard of her, and BTW, this didn't cost her a penny.
It's easy to look real generous on someone else's dime.
You're 100% right, bonfire. That was a GREAT gesture.
(And she's very funny, too.)
Go back and read her post, referenced below mine. Only the ugliest of personalities could spew out the comments she made about someone who made a good gesture of support for our troops. There's just no call for that. It's an embarrassment to this board.
There have been many in the past 6 months.
Way to go, Ellen! I've been to a taping of her show and she's pretty cool. I guess I have more to do with my life then wring my hands and think about homosexuals and pray the Bush orders them all into camps.
She is hilarious, with her self deprecating style. And she has good rapport with her audience, and is never mean or hostile. Cracks me up.
It was a very nice thing to do, and I applaud her for it.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, Anna. Hope to see you around again soon. We miss you over at ATF Night. :-(
Actually, I totally disagree. She is very funny, so long as she's not shoving her sexual preference (be nice) down other people's throats. The first season or so of her show was a riot, but then she went off on the "am I gay" thing and it wasn't funny anymore. I don't care about her sexuality, so long as she doesn't try to force it on me.
She was absolutely brilliant in Finding Nemo and it had nothing to do with her sexuality. Two plus two.
Perhaps the funniest thing to come from the whole "is Ellen gay" episode was the other gay celebrities who officially came out in support of Ellen. Nathan Lane was one of the big ones and represented all of the rest for me. It appeared that the univeral reaction when he "came out" was: "Nathan, we knew, we don't care!"
The anti-climax was hillarious.
Good Job Ellen!
Despite the ones here hung up on others sexual lives, I have always thought she is a talented comediene.
OK, so there's about ten people so far who thinks she's funny.
Once again, why have all her shows failed?
