The Drugstore War
cbs ^ | 11-23-04

After Idalia and Jose Moran's son was born by C-section, Idalia Moran's doctor advised her not to get pregnant again for two to three years, and prescribed the pill.

But as CBS News correspondent Byron Pitts reports, when she went to the pharmacy, the cashier said, "You know what? I cannot refill them because the pharmacist says it's against his religion because it's abortion."

Moran told CBS she was stunned and ashamed.

"I felt really bad, because I thought maybe these are for abortion," Moran said. "I don't know."

Across the country, more and more pharmacists are refusing to fill prescriptions for religious reasons.

South Dakota, Arkansas and Mississippi even have refusal clauses on the books. And 13 other states are considering mixing medicine with morality.

At Lloyd's Pharmacy in Gray, La., Lloyd Duplantis believes in prayer.

"God bless the great state of Louisiana, the parish…In the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit…" Duplantis said in a makeshift prayer group in the middle of his store.

And he believes birth control is tantamount to abortion. So, he stocks his shelves accordingly.

"I don’t sell condoms. I don't sell foams. I don't sell creams," Duplantis said. "I don't sell anything to do with contraception."

He said, even if a woman who was the victim of incestuous rape walked in his door after having been prescribed the pill, he wouldn't change his policy.

"I would tell her that I can't prescribe this," Duplantis said.

... I don't care what other believe about it, their beliefs, not mine... I don't see why they should try to impose their little fairy tales beliefs on me...

First, to denigrate the religous beliefs of others as "little fairy tales" is offensive. Second, if my religion considers abortion sinful, then your want:

To be a pharmacist, you need a state license. This should come with restrictions. Compelling the pharmacist to fill prescriptions should be one ...

COMPELLING me to sin is both a violation of MY first amendment rights and in no way consistent with your desire to be free of my beliefs. In stead you want to FORCE your beliefs on me in violation of the Free Exercise clause of the Constitution by using license laws to deny me my rights. Sorry, not only is your post offensive, it is illogical.

"His values, morals or lack thereof have nothing to do with what he is paid to do, dispense drugs as prescribed by a MD..."

So Zyklon-B sold to death camps, that is a values free question? Sorry, forcing a Christian merchant to carry or order items he knows to be SINFUL is a violation of his basic rights as a human being. In the United States, we have a Constitution that recognizes that right (see the Free Exercise clause of Amendment One). Why do you want to abrogate that right?

Zyklon D was dispensed by a MD?

Try for real comparisons, not trying to schock!

If your religion has a problem with abortion, then you are free not to have one..

I will have one if I need it in spite of your little fairy tales ...

Simple!

Forgot:

if your religion has a problem with other people's choices, then you can choose another profession... One where you don't need a licence from the state, with conditions attached by the state. If you are a vegeterian, being a butcher isn't for you...

Your post is illogical and irrational... But then I don't expect more...

We have laws against murder. Abortion is murder.

There's nothing religious here, unless you consider laws against murder to be religious.

I, a former SS physician, witnessed the dropping of Zyklon B into simulated exhaust vents from outside the gas chamber. Zyklon B began to work.....I, Dr. Hans Munch hereby attest that, as an SS physician on duty in Auschwitz in 1944...society gave Dr. Munch permission...just as we give the pharmacist permission.....I'm sorry it conflicts with your world view.

Your post is illogical. There is one question and one question only - is the fetus a human being deserving of legal protection? You might not believe that it is, and you might have disdain for those who do, but IF it is a human being deserving of legal protection, then simply "not having an abortion" does not satisfy the issue just like "not murdering someone" is not enough for people who don't beleive in murder.

LOL... A first trimester fetus is viable on its own? I hope you are not a doctor! Because this shows a remarkable lack of knowledge...

A fetus isn't a human being... It is a potentiial but until about the 24th week of gestation it isn't a person ... It is more like a parasite, licinhg off another human being who being independent has the right to eject it is it isn't wanted...

As simple as that!

I guess that would make us all make believe creatures.

Good Morning.

How's the weather where you are?

Rainy and cool here. (36 degrees.)

Your logic is flawed, my friend.

Eventually this "parasite" if allowed to grow, becomes at some point, a human being. To destroy that baby within the womb denies that little one the life and protection he/she should be granted under the Constitution. That is what the crux of this whole argument is about.

And is that what you consider a baby inside a womb to be? A parasite?!

I don't ever recall a woman who's pregnant, refer to her child as a parasite.

What a sad outlook.

I never claimed to be a doctor.

And your obvious ignorance of the subject shows brilliantly in your above post. There is no such thing as a "first trimester fetus," as any freshman biology student could attest. It's called an embryo.

Go back and do your homework before you decide to pop off.

One more thing, if I may...

If you attribute a being inside a woman as a parasite, you must assume that it does sustain life. If I were to remove a parasite from a creature it has taken ahold of, and put it in a jar, it will eventually die. If it dies, it means that it must have sustained life. Therefore, it was alive.

We go on the belief that life at all stages should be valued and protected.

Isn't that the better moral value of a society?

Hey you...

Your weather sounds nice.

Gotta head off to do some shopping. Daughter # 2 is under the weather today. Time to get some creature comforts for this little one.

More later... I promise.
