New Video Game Recreates Kennedy Assassination

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A new video game to be released on Monday allows players to simulate the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy.

The release of "JFK Reloaded" is timed to coincide with the 41st anniversary of Kennedy's murder in Dallas and was designed to demonstrate a lone gunman was able to kill the president.

"It is despicable," said David Smith, a spokesman for Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy, the late president's brother. He was informed of the game on Friday but declined further comment.

Kirk Ewing, managing director of the Scottish firm Traffic Games, which developed the game, said he understood some people would be horrified at the concept, but he insisted he and his team had nothing but respect for Kennedy and for history.

"We believe that the only thing we're exploiting is new technology," said Ewing, a former documentary filmmaker and senior executive with Scottish developer VIS, responsible for games like "State of Emergency." He said he sent Edward Kennedy a letter before the game's release.

Ewing said the game was designed to undermine the theory there was some shadowy plot behind the assassination. "We believe passionately there was no conspiracy," he said.

Traffic Games said the objective was for a player to fire three shots at Kennedy's motorcade from assassin Lee Harvey Oswald's digitally recreated sixth-floor perch in the Texas School Book Depository.

Points are awarded or subtracted based on how accurately the shots match the official version of events as documented in by the Warren Commission, which investigated Kennedy's assassination.

Shooting the image of Kennedy in the right spots in the right sequence adds to the score, while "errors" like shooting first lady Jacqueline Kennedy lead to deductions.

Each shot can be replayed in slow motion, and the bullets can be tracked as they travel and pass through Kennedy's digitally recreated body. Players can choose to see blood by pressing a "blood effects" option.

Players can view the motorcade from a number of angles, including the perspective of filmmaker Abraham Zapruder and a view from the "grassy knoll" where some conspiracy theorists believe a second gunman was stationed.

The game will be available via download for $9.99.

Is this a first person shooter game or is there a second shooter involved?

I have no idea, I'll have to ask my 13 year old : )

Why didn't they get some cadavers instead of those stupid dummies? It would have been more impressive if they used stiffs and did it more than once.

Anyone who goes into the Marines (Oswald was one) basic training cannot progress without sniper training.

Fidel Castro was involved. Oswald met with one of Castro's representatives in Mexico shortly before the assassination. Castro wanted to get even for the Cuban Missile Crisis. LBJ told ABC's Howard K. Smith, "Kennedy wanted to get Castro, but Castro got him."Oswald lived in the Soviet Union in the early 60's and married a Russian woman. He wanted citizenship but decided to come back to the U.S.A. However, Oswald still championed the Communist cause when he returned. Even so, creating a game based on the assassination is disgraceful. It is enough to turn a capitalist into a socialist.

"This is disgraceful. It lends credibility to assassinating presidents."

Your point also has much to say about the commonly accepted freedom of speech interpretations.  The First Amendment was well defined in what were acceptable means of protest.  Speech, assembly, a free press, and petitioning the government are absolute freedoms.  Anyone that believes burning a flag in protest is a "freedom of speech" is the equivalent of verbal speech must also accept assassination is a "freedom of speech" also.

I'm glad you made your point.  I hope it makes lots of people think about what is acceptable behavior in protest, and what is not.

You'll note that the developers of the game are in Scotland. Way to go, laddies.

Watched the show on the History Channel last night about the Kennedy assasination. The reconstructions using computer animation were very illuminating. I've believed all my life that there was not a lone gunman, but after watching the evidence, I must admit that I've changed my mind.

It wasn't the computer animation that showed the alignment of Kennedy and Connelly that did it for me, although that was most telling. No, rather it was the reconstruction of the scene from the sniper's nest at the top of the TX School Book Depository, specifically the view through the scope, showing at which points the shots were taken and the time lapses between, in real time.

I'm a good shot. In the Army, I qualified on the M16, receiving an Expert marksmanship badge. I'm an even better shot with bolt guns. But after seeing what the shooter saw, I realized that even a person with mediocre skills and only a passing familiarity with that Manlicher Carcano could have made those shots. It would not have required an expert. After the 2nd shot, the limo was moving directly away from the shooter's position and downhill, so there was no left to right adjustment and almost no elevation adjustment necessary. The shooter had virtually all the time in the world between the 2nd shot, which wounded both K and C, and the 3rd, which killed the President.

I never thought I'd see myself saying it, but Oswald was the lone gunman. There is no further doubt in my mind.

Disgraceful. This is only one step away from a "Kill Bush" game.

Watch post #42 and tell me that shot came from above and behind JFK. I've heard all the blather about muscular reaction, his back-brace etc....., an object (JFK's head in this case) does not react by moving violently backward after being hit from behind. The laws of physics WERE in play that day in Dallas. Watch how even his arm moves backward with the force of the shot, watch the bloody mist blow backward (the car was barely moving). This shot came from Kennedy's right and front.

I watched that same show. For those who didn't - at one point they build models of Gov. Connelly and Pres. Kennedy using ballistic gel (which mimics the qualities of human skin and muscle), complete with internal skeletons. The torsos were arranged just as they were in the limo. An expert marksman, with the same model gun and bullets as Oswald, re-creates the 'magic bullet' shot.

In this test, the shot was an inch or two off from where Kennedy was hit, so it hits and breaks two of 'Kennedy's' ribs. It still has enough energy to pass through all of the points traversed by the 'magic bullet' except for Connelly's leg. In the real life situation, the bullet did not break 2 of Kennedy's ribs, and so it easily had the energy to pass through Connelly's leg.

It was also demonstrated that a gun and bullet matching Oswald's could fire 4 feet into a wood beam before losing it's energy. When removed from the wood, the bullet is in a condition nearly identical to the magic bullet.

Also interesting was some photo analysis on a grassy knoll picture. One of the more famous pictures that the conspiracy people point to shows a figure known as "badge man". But doing some measurements shows that badge man was either 2 1/2 feet tall, or he was 60 feet in the air and 90 feet back and away from the grassy knoll.

Going through sniper training and BEING a sniper are not the same thing. The post reads as if LHO's job in the Marines was sniping.

If you want the gold standard when it comes to analysis of the Zapruder film (including the clearest rendering of the film itself in existence), try this. Its a fascinating view.
