President Bush stepped into the middle of a confrontation and pulled his lead Secret Service agent away from Chilean security officials who barred his bodyguards from entering an elegant dinner for 21 world leaders Saturday night.
Several Chilean and American agents got into a pushing and shoving match outside the cultural center where the dinner was held. Bush noticed the fracas after posing for pictures on a red carpet with the summit host, Chilean President Ricardo Lagos and his wife and first lady Laura Bush.
Well, I don't like it. The SS here did not secure the perimeter sufficiently. There is no way the President should have been able to go into the crowd like this to retrieve his agent. Someone needs to become unemployed over this. While the President was doing what he felt was the right thing, I can't agree... he does not need to be placing himself in potential harm's way like this. This looks fishy. I hope we get a good explanation on what really happened here.
Not to be an alarmist, but the SS can not prevent this type of action. They are always going to be vastly outnumbered on foreign soil and there has to be a level of trust between security details. The guy could have started "dropping" the Chileans, but that would hav eled to an international "incident."

I'm getting worried too. We need to pray constantly for them! What is the time difference? Are they on "tomorrow" yet? Anyone know when they're coming home?
I just pray the SS will get them out of there if they suspect anything other than an honest mistake, but from the posts of those here who know more than I do, that's not likely . . .
W rocks!!!!!\
Tough as nails, such an inspiration to our troops.
God bless George W Bush.
Here we go friends, four years of taking no crap off of anyone. Go Mr. President.
GWB is a true American HERO.
I Love that guy!
I'm glad to hear of your dad! All our veterans are wonderful. Sorry to hear of your loss though.
I do have an awesome nephew in the Air Force who is up in your area. He's actually from near Kennewick but stationed at McChord. He's just getting back there because he was assigned to be on the detail flying the president around during the campaign. He had dinner with me and some of my freeper friends up there last June and loves FR. I just wish he'd sign up and post! :-)
This was an enormous security breach. Enormous.
And George Bush knew it.
And despite that, George Bush did not leave his men behind.
I am awed by our president.
Absolutely awed.
It was a John Wayne, Ronald Reagan moment.
The POTUS waded into a brewing melee to get his men-absolutely jaw dropping in a post 9/11 era.
It rivals the carrier landing for huevos.
No wonder the troops and 62 million Americans have such tremendous respect and admiration for him.
The President cannot "come to the aide" of the Marine. He's under investigation right now and anything that could be construed as "command influence" from the Commander In Chief is not allowed.
Thanks for the memory! I was quite young at the time of the Nixon in Venezuela incident, but I was old enough to recall it later as something that was very alarming and dangerous.
I have been so busy admiring GWB's forthright behavior in this incident that it has only just occurred to me that this may have been a set-up for something else. Maybe he should start travelling with Marines. The Secret Service is certainly effective, but I think the Marine image is such that nobody would dare mess with them. Certainly not some flunky at the door.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. My God these photos are AWESOME. Just look at George Bush. Standing there wondering what the ruckus is all about then walking over and getting in the middle. Is this a riot or what? I love this man. He's one helluva President and the United States is darned lucky to have him at the helm. I'm blown away. He's one of our greatest Presidents if not the greatest. Whatta a guy. Whatta guy! Blessings on W. I will keep these photos forever. Just seeing him stand there observing then walking over with no one knowing the President of the greatest country in the whole world is standing right behind them. Absolutely the sweetest yet strongest President EVER, EVER, EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oohh the more I read about this the less I like. I'm going to be very glad when they are back on Air Force One and in the air.
I think that there would have been shots fired if anyone messed with Bush at that point.
I said something along those lines to my husband...............Who's in more trouble tonight, the SS agent or the President?
The President may be the President, but I will bet a Dollar to a Doughnut that he gets and earful from somebody on his Security Detail (and a warm handshake) for getting involved.
It was Grand! Teddy Roosevelt lives! I concur with many tonight, there is much to love about this guy.
Although I am thoroughly enjoying the photos in one sense, I agree it seems this should not have happened this way!
