Chirac Rhymes with Vichy

Jacques Chirac speaks and those who love freedom can only cringe. Recent statements by the French President make you wonder if the man is not disappointed that the Vichy government no longer exists. If his comments truly reflect French public opinion, then France is an ally we are better off without.

In statements made to the BBC, Chirac claimed that Britain has gotten nothing from its participation in the war in Iraq. If we take that statement seriously, then we should be questioning our own involvement in World War I and World War II. What did we get for helping France?

It sure as hell wasn't gratitude. Perhaps if the Vichy had agreed to a wine-for-food program France would still be under German domination and Roosevelt and Churchill could have been rich men. What we got were over 100,000 casualties for the pleasure of liberating France. What we got was the tax bill for sunken ships, destroyed vehicles and military equipment expended to liberate France. What we got was a cemetery in Normandy for Americans who gave their lives in that effort.

Come to think of it, Britain, Canada and a host of other nations didn't get anything either. If the US and Great Britain had used Chirac's standard for participation in World War II, we both would have made peace with the Nazis and our French ambassador would be speaking German. No Mr. Chirac, all we got for helping France was blood, sweat and tears. If we had bowed out of World War II, Mr. Chirac, you might still be president, but only with Nazi approval.

Chirac has also claimed the world is more dangerous with Saddam Hussein gone. It is certainly more dangerous for French politicians and businessmen who benefited from the food-for-oil program. It is certainly more dangerous for terrorist trying to operate from Iraq. It has certainly become more dangerous for Al Quaeda.

The same argument could be made for leaving Hitler in power with dominion over France. Hitler brought stability and unity to Europe. The conquered territories were for the most part at peace. The German army and the Gestapo were effectively dealing with the resistance, which would have collapsed sooner had we and Britain minded our own business. The Nazis may have even succeeded in removing the threat of communism. No doubt the world would have been safer under Hitler, provided you had the right genetics.

Apparently it is Chirac's point of view that dictators bring stability and security and unless there is something in it for you, they should be left alone. A more stable and secure France would be desirable right now. Sieg heil, Herr Chirac, but we poor misguided Americans just happen to think freedom is worth the cost, even if it's your freedom.

Sure we got something from them. The right to kiss their haughty, narcissistic butts every time they shine the moon at us.Who needs their wine or fashion..hollywood maybe. Not average Americans. For those that have always wanted to see Paris..don't worry about it. It is dirty and dangerous for everyone anyway.
