For a creature that's "made for running" we certainly don't run very fast.

We don't need to. Humans, trained properly, are good long distance runners. We can run down critters that can outrun us. Humans have been known to run down and exhaust animals such as gazelles and the like.

At least not the majority of us who are clinically obese (Body Mass Index > 25).

Actually, we do! Human beings can out accelerate sports cars for the first ten feet or so. I think we're the fastest two-leged creatures on earth. I think.

Fast is as fast does. For long distance, there is not a land bound creature alive that can outrun a human being.

"we certainly don't run very fast"

Depends on what you mean. If you mean, run faster than saber-tooth tigers, I agree. But if you mean running away from a band of enemy humans - simply keeping pace with them would allow us to reach places of safety before they killed us. And if we managed to belong to a tribe that moved into an area populated by shorter, slower humans, we'd have an edge over them in the way of attack and retreat, giving us a reproductive edge over time (because we wouldn't die as much, and they would die more). Of course, if the world was created 4000 years ago and everything was placed there pre-made and ready to go...well, I'd be wrong.

My Grandpa's advice:

1. Never run when you can walk.
2. Never walk when you can ride.
3. Never stand when you can sit.
4. Never pass up a chance to go to the bathroom.
