Specter gets key backing for Judiciary post Current chairman supports him to head panel, but Majority Leader Bill Frist says, 'We'll see.' By Jeff Miller Call Washington Bureau WASHINGTON | Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter picked up an important endorsement Tuesday in his bid to chair the Judiciary Committee, even as social conservatives vowed to step up their fight to block him. Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, the current chairman, said he supported Specter and predicted other committee Republicans would do the same. ''I think this matter will resolve itself,'' said Hatch, who will be forced to step down in January because of GOP term limits on chairmen. But Majority Leader Bill Frist was less enthusiastic when asked about Specter's chances. The Tennessee senator told CNN, ''We'll see.'' ...

Hatch said no one in Tuesday's meeting opposed Specter, whom he called ''highly respected.'' ''I believe he'll be a great chairman,'' Hatch said. Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., a Judiciary member, said Tuesday that he was leaning toward supporting Specter...

When Specter was asked if he would continue to be independent-minded as chairman, he answered ''yes.'' But he declined to elaborate.

It is still very much in doubt. So far Specter has gotten the support of Snow, Hatch, and McCain. Specter has been working his tail off to try to salvage this, but is not out of the woods yet. If people keep up the pressure, there is a fair chance someone will step up and challenge Specter. Specter will not be able to survive a challenge. There are at least two Senators who have entertained the thought of challenging. Specter knows he is in very hot water or he would not have been doing all these interviews and meeting with all the Senators. Specter is very concerned and should be.

I have a bridge to sell you.

It sounds like the "country club" republicans still run the show. I stopped donating to them years ago because of their failure to fight for my beliefs. If these "country clubbers" have their way the only thing left for me to do is to stop voting for republicans.

It is truly depressing to watch these RINO's snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

It ain't over 'till it's over! Keep up the fight till the last, there is too much too lose here to give up before the votes are taken.

If in two years, the status quo has not improved. If the Republicans have not cut the size and scope of government, I pledge to never send a dime, or vote for a RiNO like Bush again. This shell game is getting old, luckily for the parties, I am getting there too. The next generation is the one they will target, and by the time they figure out they have been had, they too will be passe'.

Great point!

If we here give up this soon, then it looks like we're the wienies. ;o)

It's funny that you think your activism will make a bit of difference in this affair. The outcome has already been determined. Surrender makes it sound like we have some role in the outcome.

I was initally outrage, but now think Specter would serve consertavies well as a "useful idiot", so to speak. I think he's chastened enough to support anyone Bush sends up there, and he now provides good cover for us (if the nominee gets through "moderate" Arlen Specter, then the Libs have a lot less to howl about).

I remember what "We'll see" meant when I was a little kid and Dad said it.

Thanks, Always Right, for sharing that Craig and Kyl are two important senators needing much calling and emailing.

It is disgusting seeing the back and forth flim-flam, but hey, it's not over til it's over.

I'm not giving up on making calls until the vote happens in January. The babies deserve a voice of vigorous protest!

You are so right. Hatch CANNOT be trusted!

I've always hated him as much as I hated Clinton. Hatch is a phony two-bit SOB. He is EVIL!

I can't understand for the life of me how he gets elected to an office in which he betrays all values and helps keep other evil ones in power.

President Bush will be very sorry if he doesn't do something about this. Those old-timer politicians are NOT his friends.

I just sent this letter to my Senator Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga:
I am a Republican voter from Paulding County GA. I am writing to indicate my disapproval of the appointment of Arlen Specter to chair the Judiciary Committee. The publication "The Morning Call" stated that on Tuesday you were leaning towards the support of Mr. Specter for the chairmanship of the Judiciary Committee.

I believe that Mr. Specter is not suited for this post as he has shown an obvious bias against pro-life issues. In the past 1-2 years he has changed his voting pattern to placate conservatives. But his true intent is shown in 2000 when he earned a 90% rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America. This sort of voting record belies an active course to further pro-abortion causes. I am certain that your Democrat friends across the aisle do not need the help of Republicans to further the cause of liberalism and the culture of death. But Mr. Specter seems intent on doing just that.

There are excellent alternatives to Mr. Specter in Jon Kyl and Charles Grassley. I wish that you will review your support of Mr. Specter in light of his history and choose a better suited candidate.

Sincerely,
*** avg_freeper to y'all ***

Precisely.
The anathematization of Arlen must transcend any specific issue.

This is not the first time the prolix senator's been a bit confused about the Constitution.

Well, with the help of the 100 corrupt and cowardly cullions, clinton walked. The senators' justification for their acquittal votes requires the suspension of rational thought (and, in the curious case of Arlen Specter, national jurisdiction).

And if you need another rationale for giving him the boot, Specter's rank opportunism rivals ---- and may in fact even exceed ---- his longwinded and constipated circumlocution encompassing nothing.

I've never trusted Orrin Hatch.

With good reason. He's one of the biggest RINO's in Washington.

They may not care less once they start getting an earful from us conservatives when he gets weak-kneed about appointing judges.

I've never trusted Orrin Hatch.

Me neither. I had a revelation about "Booby" Hatch during the Impeachment days when he met out in a cabin getaway in Utah with Al Gore in a highly underpublicized meeting. Soon after that, the Senate conveniently decided NOT to hear evidence against Clinton and not have a trial. I lay that squarely at Hatch's feet.
