Love them Frogs!
The question is, which French folly?
There were so many.

You did not highlight this part, which is equally or more damning since it is not part of a "legend":
"The mission was doomed from the moment the unruly mob discovered the cargo of a Portuguese merchantman which had run ashore laden with barrels of wine. After a looting spree which included plundering the silver plate from a local church, many of the invaders were too drunk to fight. Within two days, the invasion had collapsed."
We have bad new and good news . . . the bad news is that we're being invaded. The good news is the invaders are only the French.
bttt
Well, the last invasion of "Britain" was when the Germans occuppied the Channel islands in 1940, but we'll let that pass as nitpicking.
It's interesting that our enemies kind of have a unique perspective as well: "The bad news is that the Americans are invading us, but the good news is that they will fix all of our problems before they leave."
So the 'expedition' was comprised of people who had surrendered at least once before this time.
How......French.
If I am not mistaken the landing force at the Fishgard fiasco was commanded by an American adventurer, one Col Jackson, of who nothing more was heard after the event. Perhaps he was the precursor to such as Johnny Depp who have expated to Frogland.
The article did say, "British mainland."
Are the islands really islands?

If I highlighted all the good bits I would need to bold the entire article :-)
Well, the British "mainland" is an island, too. ;)
LOL!
Mistook Welsh women for redcoats and surrendered? I'm not surprised. Over the weekend my 8-year-old son was playing Army in the backyard. He only had a cap gun, but he was storming an imaginery French encampment and hollering, "Give it up you Froggies." Apparently word spread pretty quick because last night a French general called the house to surrender his units. Today we've got 1,500 French soldiers fenced up in the backyard and no idea how we're going to feed them.
