What will be really great is when they have prisons everywhere and lock up people for speeding and tail gating. Also, I can't wait for the police to lock people up for breaking city ordinances like building without permits. They should be in jail for a longggg time. And people who don't stop at cross walks... or worse, people who eat cookies at Safeway and forget to pay on their way out. Or people with late fines- they should be tossed in the clinker too.

I agree with your statement but I recall reading some where that the people in prision for possesion usually went to court for a more serious crime, but because the courts are packed they want to go through as many cases as quickly as possible so the plea bargin the more serious crimes (which would require a longer trial) and they just agree to go with possesion of drugs.

Though it's been awhile since I read this so it might not be wholey correct.

Well, considering that the US population is growing, illegal immigration is unchecked, and the standards for acceptable public behavior and willingness to be responsible for one's own actions continue to deteriorate, what's the big surprise?

The headline NATION'S PRISON POPULATION INCREASING is somewhat misleading. Of the almost 7 million it talks about, over 4 million are on probation, another 775,000 are on parole. Being on probation/parole is not being part of a prison population. The prison population (federal, state, and local combined) is about 2 million, not 7 million. So it's more like 1 in a hundred, not 1 in 32, who actually constitute the "prison population".
