Bush revives bid to legalize illegal aliens
Washington Times ^ | November 10, 2004 | Bill Sammon

President Bush yesterday moved aggressively to resurrect his plan to relax rules against illegal immigration, a move bound to anger conservatives just days after they helped re-elect him.

The president met privately in the Oval Office with Sen. John McCain to discuss jump-starting a stalled White House initiative that would grant legal status to millions of immigrants who broke the law to enter the United States.

Just what part of " Mr. Bush has NOT sent immigration legislation to Congress..." do you not understand ?

Just which proposals brought to Congress has Bush stated that he is supporting ?

1 in 5 emergency rooms in the state of California have already closed...

Some years ago they closed the "trauma" system for ER's in So. Cal because of the overload. Do you remember when that was? This problem has been a long time brewing...my recolleciton was sometime after Reagan passed the first amnesty bill in the mid 80's, but I could be wrong.

My sister worked at the St. Joseph's Trauma Center ER in Burbank. I remember them going down one by one, because they no longer could afford the "free care" to those cases, that were not deemed an "emergency" as per Fed. rules.

Sad. I honestly can't follow the logic on this issue

Don't follow the logic, follow the money. A lot of farms, factories and government agencies making a lot more cash with open borders, at least until the arabs nuke something.

"what percentage of votes"

A small percentage would come from the families of the illegals who are themselves legal. Also, Bush's willingness to help the illegals achieve legal status is being perceived as a true token of friendship between the republican party and latinos, in general. Also, once he's gotten his way in this, he can then "clamp down" on any future amnesty. This would be taken with a certain amount of understanding from the latino community, who realize that there's only a finite number of jobs to go around, that you just can't keep the gates open forever, etc. The Irish and Italians in the 20s felt the exact same way - glad to get here, work here, but didn't want a whole lot of competition flooding in after they got here.

By the way, just to make sure we're clear: I think anyone who wants to give illegals licenses to drive or PTA votes should be taken out and beaten. I think that's crazy. Normalizing their status is one thing (read: amnesty), but to allow an illegal to walk in, say "hi, I'm an illegal alien, can you please issue me a valid driver's license" is absolutely insain.

Again, they bitch about these people being ILLEGAL, but if the chance is given them to become legal

"Become legal"?

Once you have broken a myriad of Federal and State laws, there is no penalty?

Should we not then srike those laws completely from the books?

If they are here illegally now, and/or have broken any of the other four basic laws that I listed, then they are already criminals, and even by your own doctrine should be supported.

You are sort of arguing against yourself here.

A nation that does not have the will to protect or defend it's borders will be over run, every time. No nation in the history of mankind survived an open border policy. None, not ever, we won't either. We will be over run, the men killed and the women will become sex toys of the strongest of the invaders. As the illegal population grows, anti-American feelings in that population will grow, tick, tick, tick.

What part of NC has benefitted? My grandmother lived in east Charlotte. It was quiet...not as wealthy as Myers Park but a nice place to live. Now the schools are full of latin gangs and crime has skyrocketed. Once-clean neighborhoods are deteriorating. Taxes are higher than ever.

There was an illegal alien gang rape in Huntersville a few months ago. Many of the TV news stories are now accompanied by mug shots of hispanics.

Make that "deported".

Doh! If only I can find a Mexican to do the proofreading I am too lazy to do.

"anti-American feelings"

Didn't happen with the Cubans, the Irish, or the Italians. Most immigrants love America and want to fit in. This should be encouraged. And I totally agree, an open-door policy with no safeholds is bad.

A clear admission that you don't understand the problem. If you were born and raised in So-Cal, you would be howling for the border to be closed, because you'd be able to see what uncontrolled immigration did to what was once a paradise.

Oh yeah -- the Irish, Italians, Polish, etc, didn't have an agenda to dismantle the United States and annex territory to their former countries. Many Mexicans DO have this agenda... web search "aztlan" if you don't believe me.

"I never argued against controlling our borders, but against the stupid "we need the labor but we are going to pretend we don't" immigration laws that ENCOURAGE illegals."

We don't need labor from illegals. This is a canard.>>

Damn, this is like trying to argue with my wife!

We DO need the labor. Illegals are now supplying it. To get it, wages (and consequent prices) would RISE as lack of labor supply breeds higher prices till we get a stasis, OR illegals would come in and keep downward pressue on wages, as they do now..., or if we closed our borders, MORE businesses themselves will relocate to countries where they can get labor more cheaply.

You cannot legislate away those market forces just because you don't like them. That is a statist respoonse, and you can put lipstick on it all you like, it still grunts and squeals the same way.

Well michael Morre might be right, Bush would make a blunder that might cause his impeachment. If Bush and Karl Rove can't see what damage this would do to their constituency, supporters and the Nation then they are blind. Over 60% of the citizens are against amnesty. Time to let them know before they try and push this further. I want to know how an amnesty would be good for our country and our citizens, not for corrupt Mexico and its citizens.

I'm going to have to agree. I don't understand the conflicts in the Balkans and in certain parts of Africa either ... because I don't have any experience in those places. Likely they wouldn't give much credence to my opinion.

"Never met a Mexican until I was 21?". Then a rant about how great illegal immigration is? I dunno man, that's a hard case to make.

It's like me complaining about PMS. The chicks wouldn't buy it.

No. It won't fly.

Everyone knew his position on this issue well before the election.

He didn't flip-flop on it, or break a promise.

This has been his position from day one. And we voted for it.

I don't see how impeachment could even remotely be brought up. The President is doing exactly what he said he would.
