who will it be
Brent Bozell of Media Research Center warned those guys that it was coming, but it didn't do any good. When the other side has the horses and can execute, he executes. They blew the Pubbies away, that and OKC set them up for the government shutdown, and that did it. All Slick had to do was get some Chinese money to campaign with, and the press handled the rest.
Boomark.
Yes, yes, yes on Peggy Noonan! What a great idea!
Let's Roll!
She would destroy Hillary.
Too bad I like the guy.
Nope.
That's what I'd like to make Peggy shout out.
<runs away>
Actually, she wouldn't. You need an elective-office resume', which Hillary now has and Peggy hasn't. She needs to start somewhere -- city, county, state legislative office. Then work up to governor, if she's going to take on the likes of Hillary. Hillary's got too big a head start, since she began as a senator (sorta like being hired as an executive VP for your first job).
The road up to the presidency is either senator-VP-president or governor-president. No senator has been successful campaigning for the presidency since Jack Kennedy got the Chicago graveyard vote from Mob gargoyle Sam "Momo" Giancana.
Before Jack, you'd have to go back to.....perhaps Calvin Coolidge, or Warren Harding. I'm not sure what Wilson was. But you would have to go back a very long way to find a sitting senator who was elected president.
Evan Bayh will be the next President in '08, IMHO... If we select Rudy or McCain, bayh would run to the RIGHT of both of these guys... We MUST find someone to knock this guy off. He's be far more difficult to defeat than Hillary or anyone else.
You've GOT to be joking! He couldn't even win the OK Senate seat in a state that's overwhelmingly GOP and conservative!
Governor, not Senator
Condi/Romney
Romney would be painted as "just another Massachussets liberal", especially if he runs against Bayh.
CONDI RICE!
she'll trump the 'Rat's candidate Klintoon
and Rice will give the GOP 55 electoral votes from CA!!!
Semper Fi,
Kelly
I would gather that politically, Jeb may not be a wise choice.
Dan Quayle made a big political mistake in not returning to Indiana and running for governor after Bush 41 and he were defeated in 1992. The last non-current office holder to successfully run for President was Richard Nixon and that was in 1968.
Over time, that may improve. Keep in mind that the Senate Majority Leader, of either party, is elected by his peers, and service to the body, the institution -- okay, the Old Boys' Club -- is the first criterion he is measured by. In this respect, Tom Daschle in retrospect looks to have been a partisan midget, the kind of man reviled in e.g. Advise and Consent, and nowhere near the stature of his predecessors like Mike Mansfield and Howard Baker. OTOH, he wasn't as base as Lyndon Johnson, so I guess that's saying something.
He will have a tough time winning the RAT primary though. He is too far right on abortion and guns, and he is not exactly a dynamic personality.
Concurring thud-bump. He could be presidential timber about 16 years out, and he needs gubernatorial experience and maybe a term in the Senate (that's 14 years right there), or maybe get a term or two as vice-president, then he'll be ready to roll out.
Rudy Giuliani should consider taking on Hillary Clinton for the U.S. Senate seat from New York.
Anvil-throwing boomclang bump! That's the smartest thing I've heard all year. Damn, how'd you get so smart? Not from eating Frankenberries and Count Chocula for breakfast!
Rudy could give the Beastwoman the showdown and hide-stripping she so richly deserves (and we need). If he defeated her, the pressure comes off 2008 to find someone "super good" to resist the press propaganda about the inevitability of Hillary's anointment and coronation.
New Yorkers, in case Rudy won her senate seat, would then have to keep Beastie out of the governor's mansion, so that means the NY GOP will have to do some talent-development tout-de-suite to find a successor to Pataki.
Dan Quayle made a big political mistake in not returning to Indiana and running for governor after Bush 41 and he were defeated in 1992.
That's true. We lost a talent when Quayle muffed it. He could go back to the senate, possibly. He has beaucoup experience with nuclear-arms reduction and proliferation, and since Marilyn's a successful attorney, they'd be a power couple again -- and the GOP could do worse than to develop Marilyn Quayle, who is said to be good enough to put Dan in the shade in a raw talentfest. She lacks the experience, though.
The last non-current office holder to successfully run for President was Richard Nixon and that was in 1968.
I didn't realize it had been that long, but yes, it's almost the same as that old saw, that you need to have a job, to be offered a job.
