The only thing Warner has going for him is his personal fortune (and look how that helped Ross Perot and John F'ing).
Allen has an excellent record as governor and now as Senator. That net 4 gain in the Senate was huge. Plus it plugged him in to fundraising networks, etc.
Campaigning for the Senate four years ago, former Virginia Gov. George Allen stated he favored keeping in place the federal semi-auto ban, saying his goal in "fighting criminals was to enforce, not repeal, existing laws."
After studying the issue, Sen. Allen came to the conclusion that: "The simple fact is the Assault Weapons Ban only attacks the cosmetic features of a gun, banning some guns even though they function exactly the same as hundreds of other semi-automatic firearms."
He noted that, "In Virginia we have seen that incarcerating violent felons is the best crime reduction policy. I still believe our focus should be on criminals, not guns, and it should be on programs that work, like Project Exile and the Abolition of Parole."
Sen. Allen also expressed his concern "that reauthorizing this gun ban legislation will serve as a platform, inviting added restrictions on Second Amendment rights. The current law, then, only makes sense if the ultimate goal it is to ban more and more guns in the future, something I cannot support. This can be seen in several proposals that permanently ban a large number of guns that citizens lawfully use for competition, hunting or self defense."

Yes, I read it. When I tried to talk to Allen about it to clarify something he had said then, his campaign manager Chris Lacavitas (sp) said that Allen supported the ban, renewal of the ban, and strengthening of the ban. Allen confirmed this moments later. He reversed only when word of a possible challange from Warner reached him.
I have no problems supporting Allen if he does something proactive on the gun issue. If he doesn't, I won't waste my time doing the things for him like I did for Bush this year.
Mike
I wish he'd have taken a look at Arkansas then... We had a decent opportunity with Jim Holt. Poor guy had almost no backing and still made it to 44% or so against Lincoln.
Well, that's your loss.
BTW, it's LaCivita. Chris was one of the masterminds behind the SwiftVet ads. He (legitimately) received a purple heart in the first Gulf War.
Allen-Pawlenty has a nice ring to it
I think he's brilliant (and extremely nice, as I've met him twice), but he just doesn't come across well for some reason. I could see him getting eviscerated in debates and by the press. But then again, I could also be wrong. ;)
Not a bad resume...
FReegards...MUD
Don't let that "aw shucks" personality fool you. She's as sharp as they come.
Senator Rick Santorum would not carry Pa. Look what the Party did to Mike Fisher
McCain...NO
Yikes! that would be He...
Now that Ernest Hollings is gone, John Warner is surely the new winner of the US Senate Foghorn Leghorn award.
Get your facts straight. George Allen was Governor of Virginia before he became US Senator from Virginia. That makes him an ex-governor just as Ronald Reagan was an ex-governor when he ran for President in both 1976 and 1980.
BUMP
Because I need to read this enite thread in the morning.
A Jeffersonian conservative, United States Senator George Allen has established clear priorities, including a $1,000 per child educational opportunity tax credit; increasing the number of teachers in local schools; strengthening our nations armed services; and reducing the tax burden on working Americans, their families and on enterprises.
Senator Allen serves as Deputy Whip for the 107th Congress, working with the Majority Party leadership to formulate policy, develop strategy and generate support for the Partys legislative priorities in the Senate. He is a member of the prestigious and influential Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, the Foreign Relations Committee, and the Small Business Committee. Senator Allen was also named by Majority Leader Trent Lott to serve as Chairman of the High Tech Task Force.
Prior to his Senate service, George Allen led the Commonwealth of Virginia as its 67th Governor from 1994 to 1998, where he achieved monumental reforms in state government. He instituted high academic standards and accountability in education, abolished parole in Virginia, over-hauled the outdated juvenile justice system, enacted positive work-oriented welfare reform, and actively recruited new jobs and a record $14 billion of private sector investment. His economic development success resulted in transforming Virginia into the "Silicon Dominion" as an unprecedented number of high technology firms began to locate and expand in Virginia.
Senator Allen began his public service in 1993 as a member of Virginias House of Delegates, representing the seat once held by Thomas Jefferson, his ideological and philosophical inspiration. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in a 1991 special election.
After his term as Governor ended, Senator Allen exercised his economic development skills in the private sector as head of McGuire Woods Business Expansion and Relocation Team in Richmond.
He was named by the American Legislative Exchange Council as their first Jeffersonian scholar in 1998, and has previously served as a Distinguished Fellow for the Heritage Foundation and a Distinguished Fellow for the National Center for Policy Analysis.
Because he is a champion of improved education standards, Senator Allen was named Co-Chairman of the statewide "Communities in Schools" program after his term as Governor. The program helps young people improve academically and prepare them for a successful future.
Senator Allen and his wife, the former Susan Brown, reside in Chesterfield County with their three children: Tyler, 12; Forrest, 9 and Brooke, 2.
There is nothing "harmless" about banning guns. Because of Allen's previous support of the leftist anti-gun agenda he will NOT be getting any support from me.
Looks like he voted against a bill that prevented lawsuits against gun manufacturers, where the manufacturers weren't liable (i.e. when criminals commit a crime using a gun). Lawsuits against gun makers is another liberal democrat attempt to thwart the 2nd amendment.
