LAS VEGAS (AP) - A Navy pilot ejected moments before his fighter crashed Tuesday near Nellis Air Force Base, military officials said.
The single-seat F-18 went down about 15 miles north of the base on the northeast side of Las Vegas, according to an Air Force statement.
The pilot was rescued and taken to a base hospital. The statement said his condition was not immediately known.
The cause of the crash was under investigation.
The pilot, based at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach, Va., was attending the Air Force Weapons School at Nellks, the military said.
In June, an Air Force pilot safely ejected from a plane that crashed during a training mission about 60 miles northeast of the base and 70 miles northeast of Las Vegas.
Five people died in a March crash involving an Air Force plane ferrying contractors to a remote part of the Nellis Test Range about 125 miles northwest of the base.
