The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

A new message was posted in the last few hours by the Jeddah-based al-Qaeda-linked Al-Islah (Reform) society calling on Muslims to flee New York, Washington and Los Angeles in advance of major al Qaeda attacks in those cities. This is revealed by DEBKAfile.

"Could the anti-Red State threat in the bin Laden tape and the Texas connection we were tracking be a feint?"

I wouldn't discount the Texas connection, those maps were posted in August and I haven't seen any other posts indicating why the maps are posted. I'm still looking around but for all I know, someone's taking a trip and wants to know their way around the airport ahead of time.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2004
WWW.USDOJ.GOV

OPA
(202) 514-2007
TDD (202) 514-1888

STATEMENT OF MARK CORALLO, DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS,
ON THE HAMDAN RULING:

“We vigorously disagree with the court's decision, and will seek an emergency stay of the ruling and immediately appeal. We believe the President properly determined that the Geneva Conventions have no legal applicability to members or affiliates of al Qaeda, a terrorist organization that is not a state and has not signed the Geneva Conventions. We also believe that the President's power to convene military commissions to prosecute crimes against the laws of war is inherent in his authority as Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, and has been memorialized by Congress in statutes governing the military.

“By conferring protected legal status under the Geneva Conventions on members of al Qaeda, the Judge has put terrorism on the same legal footing as legitimate methods of waging war. The Constitution entrusts to the President the responsibility to safeguard the nation’s security. The Department of Justice will continue to defend the President's ability and authority under the Constitution to fulfill that duty.

“The process struck down by the district court today was carefully crafted to protect America from terrorists while affording those charged with violations of the laws of war with fair process, and the Department will make every effort to have this process restored through appeal.”

Two South Baghdad Churches Targets of Suspected Car Bombs

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Nov. 8, 2004 -- Two suspected vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices detonated within minutes of each other today, targeting two Christian churches in southern Baghdad, Iraq.

The first blast exploded near the St. George Church in southern Baghdad at about 6:25 p.m., according to Multinational Force officials. Initial reports from this incident indicate there were no casualties from the attack.

The second suspected car-bomb blast detonated at about 6:30 p.m., less than a mile east of the first blast, outside the St. Matthew Church in southern Baghdad. Casualty figures have not yet been reported from the scene of this attack, but Iraqi police and emergency medical personnel responded, officials said.

A spokesman for Task Force Baghdad condemned the attacks.

"These are not military operations targeting military objectives. These are simply terrorists attacking innocent people, ... innocent Iraqis," said U.S. Army Lt. Col. James Hutton, the chief spokesman for the 1st Cavalry Division.

Officials said that no multinational forces were wounded or killed in either attack.

Earlier today, a Task Force Baghdad soldier was killed when a patrol came under small-arms fire in eastern Baghdad at approximately 3:15 p.m., according to reports.

The soldier was medically evacuated from the site of the attack but died of wounds at a military medical treatment facility, officials said.

The name of the soldier killed is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. All three incidents are under investigation, officials said.

Later, a Warrior armored vehicle from the British Scotland Black Watch Battle Group was hit by a roadside bomb north of Camp Dogwood.

One soldier was killed and two others were injured, neither seriously, when the Warrior left the road after having its wheels along one side blown off. The wounded soldiers were taken by a U.S. helicopter medical team to a U.S. military hospital in Baghdad and the damaged Warrior was taken back to Camp Dogwood.
