When you see the extreme damage caused right now to the house in Detroit by a 'small' plane, it seems as extensive as the damage to the Pentagon, to me it should have 'looked' much worse and more to be seen

You're forgetting that the Pentagon was constructed with fortification elements: steel reinforced everything, heavy reinforced concrete and stone, steel doors between sections, etc. and that it's really concentric rings interconnected buildings.

Also, my recollection at the time was that there were accounts of the plane's wing hitting the ground before the plane hit the Pentagon. How much of the kinetic energy of the plane was transfered to the structure very much depends on details of how it hit.
