HOUSTON (Reuters) - In the midst of a key national election on Tuesday, Texas, the leading death penalty state, took time out to execute a man for a 1990 murder. Lorenzo Morris, 52, received a lethal injection shortly after 6 p.m. in the state's 19th execution this year.

He was the 332nd person put to death in Texas since the state resumed capital punishment in 1982.

Morris was condemned for killing Jesse Fields, 70, on Aug. 5, 1990 by slashing his throat and beating him with a hammer after breaking into his Houston home and demanding money.

Morris had no final statement as he lay strapped to a gurney in the Texas death chamber at a state prison in Huntsville.

In the midst of a key national election on Tuesday, Texas, the leading death penalty state, took time out to execute a man for a 1990 murder.

Clue for Reuters: Texas can actually manage to do more than one thing at the same time, and thus did not need to "take time out" from the election in order to carry out the scheduled execution.

Sheesh.

Good, they executed him after he could vote.

If he was executed yesterday, he'd have voted Kerry today.

I've never been there, but I think I love Texas!

I wonder if the pinko leftists had time to have a vigil outside the prison, or were they out hassling voters at polling places.

If I had known we were executing someone tonight, I would have driven past the spot in front of Texas A&M where they always protest. I'm sure they were out there, they always are.

Well, I just want to know if he gave the almost obligatory apology to the family of his victim? I love it when they do that. He got 14 years on his victim. Watching color TV, having conjugal visits with the other creeps on death row, the life of Riley compared to the dead. He probably voted for Kerry.
