Chris Matthews describes "the Catholic Vote" on IMUS in the MORNING
November 2, 2004 | TaxachusettsMan

Chris Matthews is on IMUS in the MORNING with that other great Irish Catholic Democratic operative, the plagiarist Mike Barnicle (who spent yesterday making his on-air staff practice saying, "President-elect Kerry").

When IMUS brought up that his brother is a big time Republican official in Pennsylvania, Matthews made sure everyone knew that his father, a life-long Republican, voted for Kerry (Gore last time: life-long Republican?) because he was "sick of those young guys dying in Iraq."

Matthews went on, "My two aunts are nuns - and no one tells them how to vote. The bishops are all Republicans, but the nuns are always for the poor."

Reminds me of an elderly nun I saw here in Boston during the Kennedy-Romney campaign wearing a huge KENNEDY button on her habit. When I asked her about the drowning of Mary Jo Kopecne and the details of death by partial-birth abortion, she simply said, "But ROSE suffered so much."

Much has been made of the danger of "the stupid youth vote" in this election.

They're not the only stupid ones, and highly-paid stupid people like Matthews is, of course, cheering them on.

That's a laugh.

Catholics are obviously not a monolithic voting block, and some of them are clearly at odds with the church teaching.

I attend the same church as Chris Matthews and find it funny that at the same mass Matthews is often just a few rows away from Bill Bennett, who is sitting a few rows in front of Mark Sheilds, who is sitting across the aisle from Cokie Roberts. We pray in the same place, but our consciences come to different decisions on truth.

BTW, though you may disagree with Matthews, he's not dumb, and I assure you he would know the difference between a Jesuit and a Dominican.

My wife and I are both Catholic and registered democrats. This will be the first presidential election we are voting Republican at the top of the ticket.

Congratulations! Why the change?

I live in MA and there is a large contingent of commonsensical, pro-life Democrats, but it's a generation that's dying out.

This Catholic has already voted Bush and my family will be voting Bush as soon as the polls open.

Matthews was practically having an orgasm over the "young vote turnout" this year. Joe Scarborough was pointing out that historically young voters haven't turned out..remember McGovern?

It has devastated their group, they are literally dying out. It seems there's no shortage of this kind of nun.

This kills me, especially when I think back on all of the old-school sisters. Being joined by sisters in their full habits in front of abortion mill prayer vigils was very uplifting too.

I think one of my young daughters may have a vocation, but I'm afraid for her. Where are the good religious communities?

Why is it that I can only watch Matthews when he is on the Imus program? He also mentioned two other brothers of his; one, an NRA member, who only votes the gun issues (Ohio, I believe), and another who is a Navy Nam Vet who would not vote for Kerry under any circumstances.

My husband thinks much of the MSM crappola is going to backfire on them.

He thinks the MSM has the old folks scared to death thta the MTVers, crackheads and young punks are going to decide the election. Hubby thinks the geezers are going out in force to counter them.

He also thinks the "usually too busy to vote moderates/middle of the road baby boomers " are going to vote like never before out of anger, at how the MSM has supported Kerry. He thinks FOXNews has alerted them, many for the first time, that The New York Times, CBS, ABC, and NBC have played them for suckers all these years.

I'm so glad to hear it. Maybe it's true, there is a Bush base here in western PA. It was very discouraging for me, calling for the local Republican center and speaking with individuals in the course of the day, so many who claim they voted for Bush in 2000 but wouldn't be now. And then parroting DNC talking points they've learned from TV. Our town is predominantly Catholic, but also a big union enclave. We did go for Bush in 2000, a shock to the unions, so they've doubled their efforts for this one.

The bishops are all Republicans, but the nuns are always for the poor."

The nuns who he claims are 'always for the poor' have turned into feminist Democrat activists and are mostly gray haired! The nuns who are TRULY for the poor are the young women who have joined orders that are faithful to the teachings of God and His Church, and are DOING work for the poor rather than just TALKING about the government needing to do something.

Chrissy isn't seeing the changes in the Church, probably because he's in his own little liberal Catholic parish and can't see beyond it. Methinks he's gonna get a RUDE awakening this evening.

Tell me what the Dems have done for the poor. NADA!

Most of the nuns from the old orders are left wing liberals. Plain and simple. The Dems stand for everything that is anti-Catholic!

I freeped a Dem rally yesterday in a West Virginia town (report posted here) at which a Kerry supporter (with Catholics for Kerry bumper stickers on her car) came up to me with a sheet of paper and said, "You may want to read this." I asked why she thought I'd want to read it. She replied, "It's from Kerry's bishop. He said you can vote for Kerry in good conscience."

I told the woman I was not Catholic and would vote for President Bush in good conscience, but found the exchange amusing. As a W.Va. Catholic, this woman's bishop is Bernard Schmitt, who recently told all Catholics in the diocese that to vote for a pro-abort candidate was a great evil.

Despite the Bishop's missive, a local priest's name appeared in a pro-Kerry newspaper ad the other day. Local Catholics responded thus:

WHEELING - After St. Joseph Cathedral Rector the Rev. Larry Dorsch publicly endorsed Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry on Saturday, a group of local Catholics peacefully demonstrated Monday outside the cathedral in Wheeling to express their pro-life views.

Supporters from "People of Faith for Kerry," which Dorsch joined by signing his name to an advertisement, also attended the protest to defend their position based on what they call the "complete Catholic teaching."

Led by Wheeling resident and St. Michael's Parish member Marcella Conti, the group opposed to Dorsch's endorsement held pro-life signs and paced the sidewalk along Eoff Street. "We are all part of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston," Conti said. "These are the people who feel strongly about our Catholic beliefs. Abortion needs to be not put under the rug anymore. It needs to be brought up and handled."

She added that she and her fellow demonstrators support Bishop Bernard Schmitt, from the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, as he recently wrote a letter stating that voting for a candidate who is not pro-life is a "grave evil."

"Our bishop has spoken, and we're in support of him," Conti continued. "For Father Dorsch to sign the petition supporting John Kerry was an insult against our bishop."

Dorsch, however, said Monday that he signed the endorsement for Kerry three to four weeks before Schmitt's letter was announced. "My endorsement for Kerry was not in any way a defiance of the bishop," he said. rest of story

"The bishops are all Republicans, but the nuns are always for the poor."

Bull crap. For a long time Catholic bishops looked like 'the Democratic party in robes' according to Robert Bork in Slouching to Gomorrah. Thank God a lot of them have come to their senses lately.

Thinking back, it's hard to imagine that they could have endured for so many centuries only to be seemingly dissolved in so short a time, mostly since Vat II.

How wonderful that your daughter has a potential calling. I've heard of a few and will look for the brochures (I'm in the religious ed program and get mailings.). I understand that the convent at EWTN is quite traditional but placement is more difficult because so many want to join. And that says it all, the traditional convents have to turn people away, applicants far outnumber spaces, but the others are not necessarily flourishing.

The dissident orders will die out, but new reformed orders are flourishing and will take their places. That's one good thing about this situation. Even though the heretics are staying in the church instead of leaving as they would have done in the past, in order to suck its money and try to corrupt it from within, they are getting old and dying, and not many young people are converts to their views. Young liberal dissenters just quit the Church.

Where are the good religious communities?

I'll find out for you tonight when I talk to my b-i-l who is a priest on the Gulf Coast of MS. He had talked about getting a group of nuns who are based somewhere in TN to come down and establish a community in his parish to work in the parish elementary school, but I don't remember the name of the order.

He's gonna call this evening so we can celebrate Dubya's victory. He'll be thrilled to talk to Sir SuziQ who has been assiduously avoiding any news broadcasts or stories about the election. SSQ is VEY afraid of voter fraud wiping out a Bush victory. His brother and I are confident, and have the champagne chilled and ready to go!!

As an update, I just saw Imus on MSNBC with Brokaw and Schieffer. Nauseating. I couldn't stand more than a couple minutes... This is so resonant of the Dim desparation - start out bright and early trying to discourage Republicans by their loud cheerleading for Kerry and their own opinions of how it will turn out. Imus says he has $10k on Kerry to win.
