While I've read reports of Rove and company pretty much igoring "big" media, it seems Pubbies generally are still cowed by the likes of abcnnbcbs, nyt, lat, etc. Maybe they shouldn't be. Pew Research and others have shown time and again the mainstream media is no longer the 800 pound gorilla it once was, so "moving to the middle" to garner favorable press and a few airhead votes may in fact be counter-productive. These "moves" don't sit well with true conservatives, eh?
Pubbies(Rinos excluded) at all levels need to realize making nice with the media and the Dims only buys some time. Mainstream media is to Pubbies what radical Islam is to the US. One could argue they are the same threat?
