The ambush was supposed to have been sprung by CBS, on "Sixty Minutes" the Sunday before the election. If things had gone according to plan, there wouldn't have been time before election day for the truth to catch up.
But the New York Times ran with the story it concocted with CBS about explosives missing from the Al QaQaa munitions storage facility south of Baghdad on Oct. 25th, eight days before the election. That vitiated its impact, and increased the likelihood of blowback on the intended beneficiary of this "October Surprise," John Kerry.
Some 380 tons of the high explosives RDX and HMX, once under seal from the IAEA (because they could be used in detonating a nuclear weapon), are missing from Al QaQaa.
In its first story, the Times said: "White House and Pentagon officials acknowledge that the explosives vanished sometime after the American-led invasion last year."
That wasn't the truth, as the Times admitted the next day: "White House officials reasserted yesterday that 380 tons of powerful explosives may have disappeared from a vast Iraqi military complex while Saddam Hussein controlled Iraq."
By Day 3, the Times claimed only that "some of (the munitions) may have been removed" after U.S. troops left the area.

If the MSM doesn't won't acknowledge that the weapons were gone before our troops arrived, what good does it do us that they were wrong? I can't believe they won't renounce this absolute crap story.
I agree that Fox News is one of the biggest benefactors of these stories. The more the old networks keep slinging the mud, the more viewers Fox gains in exposing them. People are gluttons for the story that busts anyone.
"Any theories on why the NYT jumped the gun?"
They feared CBS has no credibility left, so they assumed the lead. Now they join Dan on the dungheap of liberalism.
Apparently so:
...On Sunday night, New York Times Executive Editor Bill Keller told Jeff Fager, executive producer of CBS's "60 Minutes," that the story they had been jointly pursuing on missing Iraqi ammunition was starting to leak on the Internet...
(from the WaPo article linked at my #14)
E.D. Hill was outaraged about the lies of the NYT and CBS. She grilled FL Sen. Graham about the lie and Graham just mumbled and evaded. Fox News is gaining strength whereas the rest of the liberal MSM is committing suicide.
The founding fathers would be proud of the breath of freedom and truth brought to us little people by the Internet- the world's greatest research library and "grapevine."
Advertisers don't like negative letters whether you watch or read or not.
You can recruit more listeners for FOX news, talk radio etc.
You could become a member of the MRC.
""They all see what Fox News and others are doing, it will be an economic imperative for at least one of the big three to bust out and go for the gold which they are allowing Fox to rake in at this time, IMHO. We may be witnessing the beginnings of the shakeout which is bound to occur at some point.""
That's an interesting angle. Just imagine the look on, say, Peter Jennings' face upon being told that he would now be required to wear a patriotic lapel pin.
No matter what the liberal MSM comes out with, the majority of the American people will not believe it. Only the stupid and the ignorant will absorb their lies as the gospel truth...and we know which party that will be...don't we.....:)
That's the Media Research Center.
EVERYONE ON THIS FORUM COMPLAINS ABOUT CBS AND THE OTHERS IT IS IN OUR POWER TO DETERMINE THEIR POWER TURN THEM OFF!!! DONT BUY THEIR PUBLICATIONS !!!
My sense is that the race tightened a hair after the Times/CBS story first broke on Monday. But, is the MSM adequately covering the follow-up stories and the Bush response? I sense that truth is not getting the same play, yet. So, I fear that this story may still have the intended impact, to tighten the race at the wire giving the fraud apparatus of the DNC a chance to steal a red state (e.g. Ohio), and the election.
And, you are correct that we should be watchful of another hit over the weekend. The Kerry response to this story shows that the Dims are desparate.
From what I heard on Brit's show yesterday, it was a joint decision between CBS and NYTimes for the Times to break the story so CBS didn't get caught with their trousers down again.
Where is the RNC surprise?
Do we really need one? The left is self destructing before our eyes.
I know.
Once the ignorant, but not necessarily stupid, become aware that the MSM hides things from them and presents them with lies, they will recoil from the Goebbles cabal with anger.
I've found it works better if I'm not pushing my guy at the same time. More like, "No matter who you want to win, the news still ought to report the facts..."
