New York – Security Moms 4Bush (SM4B) and Women in Support of the President (WISP), internet-driven organizations operating in 43 states, are no myth. Founded earlier this year by New York and Maryland moms, the groups are spreading the word that there is only one clear choice for president. According to recent polls, the President is closing a gender gap that has traditionally favored Democrats.

The women who call themselves “security moms” believe that the 2004 election is all about who can win the war on terror and prevent another attack on our homeland. Most of these moms are married with young children. And, while they care deeply about other issues affecting their family – jobs, education, healthcare – they will tell you that none of these issues matter unless the country is safe from terrorists.

With just one week to go until the election, SM4B and WISP, are concentrating on the battleground states that will determine the number of electoral votes needed for victory. They are urging moms to contact friends and family in states like Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania to get-out-the-vote. Moms are being encouraged to travel to key states to lend support at rallies and phone banks. They work the internet 24/7 sending emails about current polls, campaign ads, and state-by-state news. Some have taken leaves from their jobs to volunteer full-time.

In 2000, 68% of married women voted, while just 52% of unmarried did. A recent Gallup Poll indicates that most single women support John Kerry while married women intend to vote for the President by nearly 2-to 1. If a majority of married women go to the polls November 2nd –with security as their #1 issue – they could be the group that determines the outcome of the presidency.

SM4B and WISP plan to run a full-page advertisement in Florida and Ohio, two of the most closely-watched battleground states. “This election is way too important,” says SM4B founder Kennon. “We have to do whatever we need to do, and Security Moms are up for the challenge.”

The ad states, in part: “It isn’t about being a loyal Democrat or Republican. We are both. It’s about September 11, 2001…a day that changed us as a country, and as a people forever.”

What is your position on the whole concept of preemptive war?
KERRY: The president always has the right, and always has had the right, for preemptive strike. That was a great doctrine throughout the Cold War. And it was always one of the things we argued about with respect to arms control....
But if and when you do it, Jim, you have to do it in a way that passes the test, that passes the global test where your countrymen, your people understand fully why you're doing what you're doing and you can prove to the world that you did it for legitimate reasons....
LEHRER: Ninety seconds.
BUSH: Let me -- I'm not exactly sure what you mean, "passes the global test," you take preemptive action if you pass a global test.
My attitude is you take preemptive action in order to protect the American people, that you act in order to make this country secure.

School Plans, Security Information Gathered by Suspected Iraq Insurgent Focus Concern on Schools in Six States

Oct. 7, 2004--Schools in six states in particular are being watched closely based on information uncovered by the U.S. military in Baghdad this summer, law enforcement and education officials told ABC News.

A man described as an Iraqi insurgent involved in anti-coalition activities had downloaded school floor plans and safety and security information about elementary and high schools in the six states, according to officials.

School officials in Fort Myers, Fla.; Salem, Ore.; Gray, Ga.; Birch Run, Mich.; two towns in New Jersey; and two towns in California have been told to increase security in light of the discovery.

Officials in the New Jersey towns, Franklinville and Rumson, were notified by counterterrorism officials last month that their schools had been possibly singled out.

"Once we were notified, we immediately put a plan into effect," said Dwight Pfenning, deputy commissioner of education for the state of New Jersey.

And William Matthews, superintendent of schools in Jones County, Ga., sent a letter to parents, faculty and staff last week notifying them that security was being increased during the election season.

"In an effort to be proactive and ensure the safety of all, we are reviewing our school safety plans," Matthews wrote in the letter. "You may notice an increase in law enforcement visibility as well as other measures designed to provide a safe and pleasant environment."

Matthews said in the letter that the information was not considered a threat.

On Wednesday, the federal government warned schools nationwide to look out for suspicious activity that might signal terrorist activity, and told school officials to be on the lookout for anyone spying on their buildings or buses, expressing interest in obtaining site plans, and other types of suspicious activity.

It followed an analysis by the FBI and the Homeland Security Department of the school siege in Beslan, Russia, last month, in which nearly 340 people, many of them children, were killed.

Law enforcement officials said they had no easy explanation why an insurgent in Baghdad would be gathering such specific information about American schools, some of them in small towns.

And though the information was recovered in July, it was not given urgency until the attack in Beslan.

Ultimately, officials say they are hoping to increase security in schools and heighten awareness without causing parents nationwide to panic.

America needs YOUR help, Mom -- to keep from squandering the investment you have so faithfully and painstakingly made.

- WE ARE A FREE PEOPLE ... not because we are somehow "better" -- but because your mothers taught us and showed us, day by day as we were growing up, the value of telling the truth even when it was tough. (Even today, it's the moms who best understand and appreciate what's at stake when our President speaks bluntly and sticks to his story.)

- WE ARE A COMPASSIONATE PEOPLE ... because of how our mothers hurt for us when we fell down on the playground, and taught us to be helpful when someone was in trouble. (Even today, it's the moms who pay the dearest price, whose hearts ache most deeply, when their children get hurt in Iraq or Afghanistan. But it's also the moms who sense the value and the necessity of standing strong for moral values in an immoral world.)

Do you realize it's because of mothers that our nation can defend itself with an all-volunteer army? There is no draft (and in spite of sick untruths to the contrary, there will be no draft) because you taught America's young people to be willing to serve.

Do you realize it's because of mothers that our nation was able to reform welfare and move millions of families back into the working mainstream of this country? These families are providing for themselves today, they're productive citizens -- because you set the example of industry and self-sufficiency for an entire generation.

I know that raising your kids hasn't been easy. I know it's been a sacrifice.

But today, to be honest, YOUR INVESTMENT IS AT RISK.

This election has gone beyond the question of "Bush?" or "Kerry?"

This election will send an overwhelming message to the next generation, and to the world.

It will either be a message affirming the values that you instilled into your children and grandchildren --
Integrity -- Commitment -- Compassion -- Hard work ...

Or it will be a very different message:
"Our nation's values are adjustable."
"It's okay to change your story to fit the situation."
"Threaten us, and we'll back down."

The message of this election will be heard and absorbed our children and grandchildren. It will make a resounding impact on the children of the world. It will be taken to heart by the mothers and grandmothers of Iraq, and Afghanistan.

Personally, I believe they need to see your example ... they need to be inspired by your commitment. They need to connect with you spiritually. They need to hear from you, heart to heart.

They need to see and understand that we are bringing their children the gift of peace, of freedom -- of equal rights for themselves and their daughters -- of health care, of education.

They need to hear clearly from America that they don't have to sacrifice their children by turning them into living bombs in order to receive the blessing of heaven.

- If America dismisses the administration that has honored the sacrifice and investment of our nation's mothers and grandmothers, I grieve to think about the despair of the women of Iraq and Afghanistan ... the women of the nations of the world who are looking to America for hope and strength.

Can they really look to John Kerry for greater strength, greater integrity, greater protection, more solid security, deeper commitment and higher values than George W. Bush? I can't imagine how such a thing could happen.

This President may have made some mistakes, but there is no questioning his rock-solid strength and spiritual integrity -- and his dogged commitment to keep us safe in the face of history's most vicious terrorist threat.

- NOT A SINGLE TERRORIST ATTACK OF ANY KIND, ON ANY SCALE, LARGE OR SMALL, HAS BEEN ALLOWED ON U.S. SOIL SINCE THE SHOCK OF 9/11.

- PRESIDENT BUSH HAS WISELY AND EFFECTIVELY SHIELDED AND SEALED OUR BORDERS FROM HARM.

Now I don't know if you consider yourself a "soccer mom" or a "security mom" or a "Grandma" -- or simply as a caring, concerned woman of America. But I can tell you this:

Our nation and our President need your help. As someone who has been a mother, you hold a special place in this pivotal election.

- What will become of the investment you've made in your children and grandchildren?
- This election is as much about YOUR HOUSE as it is about the White House.

So I ask you to take THREE vitally important steps in the next few days -- to send a message to the children of our nation and the mothers of the world on November 2 --

PLEASE spend as much time as you can on these 3 ideas, beginning TODAY and continuing up to Election Day:

1. PRAY.

This election is on November 2nd (11-02), so say a prayer for President Bush each day, between now and the election, at exactly 11:02 AM and 11:02 PM. But honestly, whenever you can pray will be helpful!

2. FORWARD.

Forward part or all of this email message to EVERY MOTHER AND GRANDMOTHER IN YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS BOOK, PLEASE. Ask them to please forward it to the moms and grandmas in their email directories too!

3. TALK.

Seek out and find those mothers and grandmothers within your personal "sphere of influence" who have not made up their minds about which candidate to vote for. Please explain to these friends that a vote to change Presidents will hurt our children and grandchildren for years to come.

As university professor Mathew Manweller has said:
"The election of John Kerry will serve notice to every terrorist in every cave that the soft underbelly of American power is the timidity of American voters.... Bin Laden will recognize that he can topple any American administration without setting foot on the homeland."

Mom, this is my nightmare. I think it's the nightmare of every American child. God help us not to let it happen. You got us this far. God bless you. And may God, in His infinite mercy, bless America.
