NEW LONDON, N.H. - Laura Bush said Thursday that Teresa Heinz Kerry didn't need to apologize for saying she couldn't remember whether the first lady had ever had "a real job."
"She apologized but she didn't even really need to apologize," Mrs. Bush told reporters at a coffee shop before attending a rally for President Bush (news - web sites). "I know how tough it is and actually I know those trick questions."
USA Today had asked Heinz Kerry, the wife of Democratic candidate John Kerry (news - web sites), if she would be different from Mrs. Bush as a first lady.
"Well, you know, I don't know Laura Bush. But she seems to be calm, and she has a sparkle in her eye, which is good," Heinz Kerry said in the interview published Wednesday. "But I don't know that she's ever had a real job - I mean, since she's been grown up. So her experience and her validation comes from important things, but different things."
Heinz Kerry later said she had forgotten that Mrs. Bush had worked as a teacher and librarian. "There couldn't be a more important job than teaching our children," she said in a statement. "As someone who has been both a full-time mom and full-time in work force, I know we all have valuable experiences that shape who we are. I appreciate and honor Mrs. Bush's service to the country as first lady and am sincerely sorry I had not remembered her important work in the past."
Bush adviser Karen Hughes later criticized Heinz Kerry twice - first for remarks "indicative of an unfortunate mind-set that seeks to divide women based on who works at home and who works outside the home" and later for an apology she called "worse because she left out the very important real job of a mother."
Grace personified in our First Lady.
Laura Bush is a gracious Lady, to say the least. Now Teresa is an old rich #####!!!
Very classy, Laura. The ketchup bitch doesn't deserve it.
Yep, it's too bad Terayza was never a teacher. That's the only way she could ever have any class.
Graciousness!
Love Your Enemies
(6) 43 "You have heard that it was said, "You shall love your neighbor[7] and hate your enemy.' 44But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,[8] 45that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47And if you greet your brethren[9] only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors[10] do so? 48Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.
Our First Lady is a class act. The good Lord in his eternal love for these United States, chose this "rose" of Texas to be, not only our "First Lady", but our first "mother" as well!!! God Bless you, Laura Bush. We all love you dearly. A true, honest, first class act!!!
Terayza sliced in two and she probably doesn't even know it.
And that is Gracious.
What a gal.
Thanks.
The Laura Aura. President Bush is lucky to have her on his team!
The obvious subtext of this - "no apology is needed" - is that no apology is sufficient: The insult is out and a canned "apology" written by Kerry's spinmeisters isn't going to un-say her words.
sKerry and Mamma T are waaaay out of their league with the Bushes.
Her reply is nice, but at some point the Bushes need to use such instances to fight back. When Cheney was asked about the divisiveness in America, he stammered with no answer.
The White House should have responded to the latest Teresism by saying, "This is just another example of the left wing causing division in America. Between Michael Moore and Teresa, the slander never ceases."
"One subtlety - Laura called THK a dope without realizing it "
I don't think you should assume that Laura didn't realize it.
Women who support Kerry should take a second look at this entire campaign, and see what type of lady Laura Bush is, and the type of loony-bin that teresa heinz kerry is, and think about the outcome and affect it will have with one or the other in the white house, in a way, representing the Women of America.
Brilliant line, Mrs. Bush.
I just wish Laura had said, "We all say things we regret. But I don't know exactly what I think about her comments. I look forward to hearing an explanation of what exactly she meant."
