NEW LONDON, N.H. - Laura Bush said Thursday that Teresa Heinz Kerry didn't need to apologize for saying she couldn't remember whether the first lady had ever had "a real job."
"She apologized but she didn't even really need to apologize," Mrs. Bush told reporters at a coffee shop before attending a rally for President Bush (news - web sites). "I know how tough it is and actually I know those trick questions."
USA Today had asked Heinz Kerry, the wife of Democratic candidate John Kerry (news - web sites), if she would be different from Mrs. Bush as a first lady.
"Well, you know, I don't know Laura Bush. But she seems to be calm, and she has a sparkle in her eye, which is good," Heinz Kerry said in the interview published Wednesday. "But I don't know that she's ever had a real job - I mean, since she's been grown up. So her experience and her validation comes from important things, but different things."
Heinz Kerry later said she had forgotten that Mrs. Bush had worked as a teacher and librarian. "There couldn't be a more important job than teaching our children," she said in a statement. "As someone who has been both a full-time mom and full-time in work force, I know we all have valuable experiences that shape who we are. I appreciate and honor Mrs. Bush's service to the country as first lady and am sincerely sorry I had not remembered her important work in the past."
Bush adviser Karen Hughes later criticized Heinz Kerry twice - first for remarks "indicative of an unfortunate mind-set that seeks to divide women based on who works at home and who works outside the home" and later for an apology she called "worse because she left out the very important real job of a mother."
Simultaneously, Laura shows the personification of true class, and gives TerAYza yet more rope to metaphorically hang herself with. Gotta love that woman.

I am with you -- looks like we are in the minority. She should have called THK "not a good woman" or something and this story might have actually gotten some play in the MSM.
That's funny
Ditto that.
Barbara Bush is so gracious.
Her response was just right and put terraza in her place in a sweet way.
I think it was perfect to have Karen Hughes play bad cop and let Laura play good cop.
I expected this from such a classy lady like Laura.
Mary Jean
Ma'am
My wife, the sole depository of class in our marriage has said to me many times that the modern feminists ruined it for all the gals. She expects the door to be opened, the chair to be pulled back, men to stand when women leave the table....etc...Quote:"we had it all and now it's all gone". I really do think that if she accidentally ran over a feminist, she'd back up to make sure....
Lara shows her CLASS, yet again, something THK's money could never buy!
She is such a LADY!
DOH!! LAURA!! Don't have my glasses on, so I didn't see the typo until it was posted!!
My first thought too, annie.
If your enemy insults you, be kind to her. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head, and the LORD will reward you........paraphrasing Proverbs 25: 21-2
I have no words for how much respect I have for LADY Laura and her (blessed) husband!
"If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: for thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee."
Sounds like something from the koran
Ditto for me. Our First Lady defines the words "grace" and "class". All the money in the world can't buy those qualities.
Thanks for the ping, oWf!
Joke??? Right???
Amen to that. Laura reacted exactly as I thought she would - with kindness.
Masterful. But Ms. Kerry did leave the table open.
She is filled with the Graciousness, Forgivness, and Kindness of our God, and is a wonderful example of the proper conduct of a real Lady. God bless her and our President Forever!
