Farscape: Peacekeeper Wars (Vanity)

Posted on 10/17/2004 8:39:29 PM PDT by Qwinn

Discussion thread for anyone who likes Farscape, and has watched the first half of what we've been dealt as the Series Finale tonight. What'd you think?

Personally, I expected it to be awesome, and found that I underestimated it. I'm VERY impressed. Of course, this is with the caveat that the science in this particular science fiction is about as soft as scifi can get - ludicrous, really - but the plots and character development are top notch as usual. Why SciFi ever cancelled this phenomenal show is beyond me.

I so wish someone had the cash to do a hard SF show.

Excellent! Glad to see Charmed set for next year, too. From what I understood, they were having some trouble with the music rights for those.

The problem with hard sci-fi is that the science is made up by people with liberal arts backgrounds. It usually doesn't survive first contact with a critical technical mind. So the answer is to deemphasize the science. Lots of alien makeup and exploding spaceship models does not shift the emphasis back, but do look cool. You have to make the science so advanced as to seem to be magic. That way you don't have to defend the tech and you can focus on the story. Series that don't try to explain the tech have a better chance of survival.

I have tried to explain to people that you cannot hear an explosion in space. That if a ship had shields that could block laser/phaser that it would be invisible because you could not see light reflect from it.

It gets tiring some times.

If we can't hear explosions in space, how come we can hear music?

;-)

"I have tried to explain to people that you cannot hear an explosion in space."

If you are in space, you would be listening with your 'radio', so you might 'hear' the explosion if it also emitted 'radio' noise.

"That if a ship had shields that could block laser/phaser that it would be invisible because you could not see light reflect from it."

More important, if your shields block light even as intense as lasers & phasers then you couldn't see past your shields and you would keep smacking into planets, stars, derelict NASA probes and other space debris.

The trick is to not try to explain it, though. Just suspend disbelief as long as you can. When they don't try to explain the science it's easier.

Yah. But I'm a reader, and try my best to avoid TV, almost any TV, because the commercials drive me crazy. (other half is fighting TiVo) And this will probably get me flamed, but I NEVER liked "Star Trek" - (Wagon Train to the Stars) thought it was so much hooey. Guess I'm just an old-fashioned reprobate. I prefer military SF -Pournelle and Drake are two of my favorites.

My dirty secret is that I watch the TRASHIEST stuff for relaxation and decompression after I get home from office. "Wildest Police Car Chases"

Go figure. ;-D Norski
