I have been a lifelong Republican. I proudly served as a senior political appointee in the Reagan and elder Bush administrations. But today I am supporting John Kerry for president because I personally witnessed his courage, tenacity and leadership when he waged war against a dangerous international criminal enterprise. Because of that experience, I believe that he is best qualified to lead our country in an era of fundamental threats to our national security.
In 1988, Kerry began an investigation of international drug connections as chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Terrorism, Narcotics, and International Operations. He discovered that the Bank of Credit and Commerce International, a powerful global financial institution, was laundering drug money for Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega and serving as banker for some of the world's most notorious terrorists, criminals and despots, including Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein.
At that time, I was the U.S. Commerce Department official responsible for Panama and other Latin American countries involved in the drug trade. I held a top-secret security clearance and read CIA reports bluntly describing the bank's role in drug-money laundering and other illegal activities. I was aware of Kerry's efforts to stop BCCI's activities.

I didn't put a barf alert on the story because I wasn't at all sure that the story was inaccurate. It seems possible to me that, as disgusting as Kerry is, he might have done one good thing in his career. I would like to know the other side of the story, apart from the one presented here, and thought my fellow freepers might be a source of that other side.
He's a "doctor" of what?
As the article states at the end, he has a PhD in international affairs from USC, an MBA from the University of Edinburgh, and is working on a JD at Seattle University.

Kerry did such a good job shutting down BCCI that al-Qaida was unable to kill 3000 Americans on 9/11. Oh, wait, they did. So much for Kerry's big accomplishent.

What is Kerry’s record during his 20 years in the Senate?
• Kerry voted against most of the major weapons systems that our troops use today.
• Kerry voted against the $87 billion for support of the troops, after he voted for it.
• Kerry led the fight against President Bush's Department Of Homeland Security, voting against it six times and delaying it for 112 days.
• Kerry missed more than 75% of the meetings of the Senate Intelligence Committee.
• Kerry proposed slashing the intelligence budget by $7.5 billion after the first attack on the World Trade Center.
• Kerry has voted at least 350 times for higher taxes.
• Kerry has been able to persuade congress to pass only eight insignificant laws that bear his name, and most of those were strictly ceremonial.
• Kerry has proposed that use of force by the US must meet a “global test.”
• Kerry voted against the first Gulf War, after Saddam invaded Kuwait. By Kerry’s standards, Saddam would still be in power, and in Kuwait.
• Kerry says he has a plan. Custer had a plan, too.

He's stealing Ron Silver's line and NO Republican would vote for Kerry. Nice try, but Kerry does not project Republican or conservative values.

They have the background. Ashby previously served with the Commerce Department as deputy assistant secretary of commerce for the Western Hemisphere. He also directed a public relations campaign for the Czech Republic’s voucher privatization program.
Commerce Department, huh? Interesting.
And of course he did everything to keep Saddam in power when it came down to it and then turns a blind eye to one of the biggest scandals in history, the oil for food program.He actively champions this corrupt organization.
You have to wonder though, how come Kerry himself has never said anything about this? it's not like he's modest about himself.
This is the first I've heard of any of this, and I'm certainly not in a position to question its veractiy. However, I find it outrageous that any true conservative could support Kerry considering his domestic policies and his 20-year senate record of tax increases and weakening both our military and our intelligence. Dr. Ashby can support Kerry because of personal knowledge he has about a specific incident - there have been times when I have done supported candidates I didn't agree with philosophically because I knew them personally - but to begin this by saying he worked for Reagan he seems to suggest that Kerry is or could be a conservative's candidate. That's simply wrong. Kerry's "plan" for everything is a liberal, big government "plan."
