Mistake number 1).

Having a loaded firearm near a bar when people are partying.

Mistake number 2).

Not dropping his weapon and raising his hands when the law showed up.

I think he might have already received the money since he won it in 2000. He had probably already spent it.

Mary Champaine bought 13 tickets - one for herself and every employee at the Starbucks coffee shop she runs. She fronted the money for several absent workers, but didn't hesitate to split the jackpot 13 ways. The 53-year old manager recounted how her husband died of cancer last year, how she lost her job when retailer Fedco went under last year and how her son, 24, was shot and killed several years ago. The other winners include Rick Camat, 28; Leah Coley, 30; Dina Escobar; Arely Gaytan, 27; Keith Matthews; Moisha Oliver; and Keana Essex, 16, whose winnings will go to her mother Kellye Richard. Each will get U$6.7 million before taxes, over 26 annual payments. Magic Johnson is an investor in their Mid-City Starbucks.

Irony can be quite....ironic.

Next time something like this happens I propose we call it a "Camat".

I'm sorry, but when you start firing a gun, unprovoked, in public, you lose your status as a "Lottery Winner" and become an "Armed Assailant".

California had him whacked, he didn't take a lump some, therefore they need him "gone" to help cover the gazillion dollar socialist failure, ie, California.

That the family thinks that it is wise and legal to fire off a handgun on a crowded city street in order to break up a fight speaks volumes about the intelligence and character of this family.

If he had been a diehard Seahawks fan he might have shot himself after the game. The police may just have saved him the trouble.

Guns don't shoot into the air, guns kill people.

"He shot once in the air to scare people away. He didn't aim it at anyone," said Camat's brother

The kid watched too many Westerns....and believed them.

Now he will have to pay a 50% death tax on money he already paid close to 40% income tax on after he won.

"Camat was one of 13 Starbucks employees in Los Angeles who shared an $87 million California lottery jackpot in 2000."

The article didn't mention he was nominated for another award: The Darwin Award.

What a rocket surgeon!

Police alleged that Camat was carrying a handgun and fired at a car that was leaving the area. Authorities said he crouched behind another vehicle and pointed a handgun at officers.

He wasn't a threat, just a nuisance!

""He shot once in the air to scare people away. He didn't aim it at anyone..."

Neither did the guy who shot off a round into the air in Daly City a few July 4ths ago. When that bullet came down, it went right into a little girl's head. She was playing in the back yard a couple blocks over. Her Mom watched her drop and die.

Too many people in today's society choose to make judgements too soon with too little information.I am pretty sure that everyone who posted remarks about the story of Ricky Camat has peas as brains because they prejudge on facts they dont know. People are too quick to believe the worst in people, they cant comprehend that there are always three sides to every incident or story: in this case the family and friend's side, the police side and the truth. Well the truth will come out and it will side with the family/friends side. Let me tell you a story of man that loved life and was not a thug nor stupid.People may say that he must have spent all of his winnings; will this is wrong. He was very smart and a entrepreneur investing in real estate, stocks, bonds and plans of pursuing other business ventures. That night he was protecting his friends and family, he was not aware that there were cops to help them. There was a large group of maybe 15-20 men ready to fight his friends. He only did what was necessary to scare and disperse those men so he shot one in the air. Moments later without any warning or words cops shot him in the back. In those very seconds no one was able to help him not his friends nor family, the cops didnt even go over to him to help. They just stood around. All in all, the truth will come out and people like those of you that make stupid remarks and judgements should really look themselves in the mirror and see who is the stupid and prejudice one. People dont realize the things they write and say affect people, not just the family and friends of the person you are writing these remarks about but the people around like your wife, husband and especially your children because they are the ones that will think exactly like you. This will decrease the intelligence in society so I feel sorry for your offsprings and in society in general because of all of YOU.
