Lottery winner shot to death by Seattle police
Houston Chronicle ^ | Associated Press

SEATTLE -- A man shot to death by police outside a football stadium has been identified by his family as one of the winners of an $87 million lottery jackpot.

Rick Camat, 32, was shot early Sunday as dozens of people fled to avoid a fight outside a bar before a St. Louis Rams-Seattle Seahawks game.

Police alleged that Camat was carrying a handgun and fired at a car that was leaving the area. Authorities said he crouched behind another vehicle and pointed a handgun at officers.

Relatives insisted Camat only fired into the air to break up the fight and said officers never issued a warning before shooting him.

"He shot once in the air to scare people away. He didn't aim it at anyone," said Camat's brother, Brian, who was with him at the time.

Officer Debra Brown said the family's account "differs vastly from the statements of dozens of witnesses who were at the scene that evening."

The officer who fired at Camat remains on paid administrative leave. An internal police review and a court inquest are planned.

Camat was one of 13 Starbucks employees in Los Angeles who shared an $87 million California lottery jackpot in 2000.

He recently bought a house in Federal Way, a suburb between Seattle and Tacoma, relatives said. He previously used his share of the lottery winnings to buy a house for his mother and cars for his siblings.

Apparently money can't buy you longer life either. Especially when you already need to invest in the brain department.

Lawyers, Guns & Money - Warren Zevon

Well, I went home with the waitress
The way I always do
How was I to know
She was with the Russians, too

I was gambling in Havana
I took a little risk
Send lawyers, guns and money
Dad, get me out of this

I'm the innocent bystander
Somehow I got stuck
Between the rock and the hard place
And I'm down on my luck
And I'm down on my luck
And I'm down on my luck

Now I'm hiding in Honduras
I'm a desperate man
Send lawyers, guns and money
The sh!t has hit the fan

Send lawyers, guns and money...

California had him whacked, he didn't take a lump some, therefore they need him "gone" to help cover the gazillion dollar socialist failure, ie, California.

That the family thinks that it is wise and legal to fire off a handgun on a crowded city street in order to break up a fight speaks volumes about the intelligence and character of this family.

Alot of these incidents are determined by what the police think the public perception is.

A few years back, there was a case where two guys were shot dead outside a casino in the middle of the night. It was all over the news for a few days, and all the talk of the guy being a murderer, etc.

Then, it just disappeared. Didn't show up on the news at all.

Casino people reviewed some security tapes, turns out the dude had cashed in over 4K, two creeps saw him do it and followed him. He gets to his car, the creeps try to roll him, he pulls out his 9mm, tells em to back off, they don't.

Couple shots, the guy gets in his car and calmly drives away. No charges ever filed.

Someone has to pick up the tab. His debts don't just go up in a poof of smoke the moment he dies or gets killed.

If he had been a diehard Seahawks fan he might have shot himself after the game. The police may just have saved him the trouble.

chances are he did blow it and was broke at the time of his death.

A magazine did a story on people who won large prizes years ago (before lotteries were so prevalent) and it was amazing, not only how many of them had spent it all and were seriously in debt, but how many of them died an unnatural death within a year or two of winning.

In one contest, 12 heavily customized Oldsmobile Toronados were given away (back in 1967) and all but one or two had been wrecked within a year or so of being given away. I guess my Dad was right when he said "easy come, easy go".

The CCW law (CPL in Washington state) does not permit carry anywhere you have to be 21 to enter (due to alcohol). Our boy was illegal. And stupid.

"Let's see. $87 million is not really $87 million when put in present day dollars. Maybe $50 million.

Then divided by 13 = $380k. Taxes would reduce it to maybe $220k.
"

Better buy a new calculator. Yours has slipped a decimal point.

Someone told me to get a calculator but those new-fangled things confuse me. Now where is that screwdriver? I need to tighten my sliderule. The dang thing keeps slipping out and falling on the floor. BTW, is it add or subtract a place when moving the slide to the right?

This must be that "fuzzy math" I keep hearing about.
