Woman Appears In Court For Eating Candy At Metro Station

WASHINGTON -- A woman from Bowie, Md., who was arrested for eating a candy bar at a Metro station, had her day in court Thursday, but it was a brief visit.

Stephanie Willett claims she was frisked under her shirt, handcuffed and held for three hours after a Metro transit officer confronted her for eating a candy bar on the escalator.

Transit police claim Willett was "belligerent."

In court Thursday, Willett tried to tell a judge what happened that day, but she was cut off after a few minutes. The judge told Willett her case is over and that it ended when she posted $10 to get out of jail last July.

Willett has a year to appeal the arrest.

The incident gained worldwide attention, and goes on a list of other Metro Transit Police actions that have raised both eyebrows and questions.

In September, a transit officer reportedly forced a pregnant woman down on the floor and pushed his knee in her back, after he claimed she was talking too loud on a cell phone.

In 2002, an officer ticketed a wheelchair-bound cerebral palsy patient who the officer said cursed when he was unable to find a working elevator to exit the system.

And in 2000, an officer handcuffed a 12-year-old girl for eating a french fry on a subway platform.

Are you, by any chance, related to Cosmo Brown (Okay, you're a cab).

OK. Good. It's nice to know people can actually reach agreements on this site. :^)

No, but it's my understanding that cosmetologists have been looking for this Brown matter for years. I'll let them know when I find him.

(With a name like that, I'm sure he'd appreciate being turned into a physicist!)

It wouldn't be for eating a candy bar or other minor annoying behavior; it would be for saying "F*** you, a$$hole, I'll do what I want" when asked to knock off said minor annoying behavior.

LOL!

How typical. You'd shoot someone in the back for some minor annoying behavior. Another 'compassionate conservative' for Bush.

Note that nowhere did I say any of the things you've attributed to me.

Don't let the facts get in the way of your diatribe. (Or, your shooting people in the back)

What a maroon.

Hey, you're the guy who thinks that there's an absolute right to be an a$$hole and trash subways, without police interference.

OK:

It's not that difficult and it certainly doesn't require a cop, nor does it require you to become Owl_Getz.

Again, no one if forcing you to take public transportation. It's a decision you make every time you get on a bus/train/subway. Dealing with these issues is a natural consequence of your decision. If you don't like the consequences, then next time, choose differently.

Proven.

The NYC subway system isn't for the faint-hearted. However, I've managed to ride it virtually every weekday for the past 12 years without a single food/beverage incident that actually did me or my clothes even temporary harm. Fact is, lots of people simply need to eat/drink while in the subway system, for lack of any other opportunities -- e.g. two-job workers travelling between shifts, and unable to afford the time of money for a take-out meal. I have less sympathy for the Starbucks crowd, but it's nearly always their own expensive clothes they ruin when they spill.

It's to make up for the (infrequent) times I snap and yell "Could y'all PLEASE move to the center of the car!"

I don't understand why so many people have a problem with something that seems so simple - If you're not getting on the train, don't stand on the platform blocking the door. If you are getting on the train, don't stop just inside the door and block it.

I've forgotten who posted about how quiet it is, but that poster didn't ride the 4:40 out of Farragut West - the driver of that train gets on the intercom and jokes with everyone. A couple of weeks ago he was telling us about the delays in the system, then added: But I do have good news - I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance. He turned a crowded trainload of grumpy people into laughing comrades-in-misfortune immediately.

I've heard that driver! He's wonderful, isn't he??

I'm too busy telling the tourists, "No, that's not the White House out the window, it's the Capitol" to tell them not to eat. I'll remember that next time! :-D

Proven.

Hardly. Context, context, context. Context is everything. By taking my quote out of context, as you have done, you can have me saying any number of things, but doing so doesn't make them true.

Nowhere did I advocate being an asshole or trashing subways, as you've attributed to me. I only wrote that if one doesn't like what other people are doing that there is nothing forcing one to endure it.

Let's review:

Owl_Eagle wrote:

I don't want to slip on a dropped french fry, sit in a spilled soda or listen to a loud, stupid cellphone conversation.
In response I wrote:

If you don't want to slip on a dropped 'freedom' fry, then watch where you walk.

Similarly, if you don't want to sit in a spilled soda, then look before you plop your butt down.

If you don't like a loud, stupid cellphone conversation, then move to a different car/seat.

So, nowhere did I advovate being an asshole or trashing the subway and your assertion is not proven.

What has been proven is that you are a coward because you're willing to shoot someone in the back and that you're willing to say anything, even a lie, in order to gain an advantage.

Is this the same system that the infamous Fawn Hall got into trouble eating a banana?

Cell phones do not bother me at all. I often wonder why we complain about cell phone convos. It doesn't seem to be any diffent than if the person on a cell phone was talking to a seatmate.

It's not cowardice, it's being effective in removing a$$holes from the planet. I learned my trade in the Marines, and they taught me to not bother with a "fair fight." If that worries you, don't start a fight with me. And quoting your own frickin' words at you isn't lying. You said that it doesn't take cops to enforce this, and if one doesn't like the idea of the subways being s**tholes, one shouldn't ride the subway. You can't walk away from it, no matter how much of an idiot it makes you sound after the fact.

I used to think most democrats didn't have jobs but apparently quite a few work as Metro Transit Police.

You can say whatever you want. It still doesn't make it true.

As I said, you're willing to do anything, including lying in order gain an advantage.

And quoting your own frickin' words at you isn't lying.

But quoting them out of context, is lying. The liberal media does it all the time.

You said that it doesn't take cops to enforce this, and if one doesn't like the idea of the subways being s**tholes, one shouldn't ride the subway.

No, what I said was that it doesn't take a cop (or in yor case, shooting someone in the back) to keep someone from slipping on a 'freedom' fry, sitting in a spilled soda or listening to a loud cellphone conversation. It just means taking a little responsibility for one's own actions and acting accordingly.

I don't slip on food dropped because I watch where I'm walking. By the same token, I don't sit in spilled sodas because I look before I plop myself down. If someone is having a loud cell phone conversation and it bothers me, I move.

And for the record, none of what I've written should be construed to mean that I advocate being an asshole or trashing the subway.

Exactly.

Or finding gum on the sidewalk or spilled soda in a McDonald's.
