"It means, unfortunately, that employers here will have less options in terms of hiring..."

Dear employer: Have you considered hiring some of us skilled but unemployed U.S. citizens? (Maybe I'm just jaded because I've been out of work for over three years.)

It didn't help to drive by the big construction project in town today (new library) and see all the Mexicans wearing hardhats. I still have a hardhat. Why won't they hire me?

The unemployment rate in our little county is the highest in North Carolina, which is one of the highest in the United States.

But there are no jobs for us Americans here.

In this age relocation has become a staple of employment. It's always worked for me.

Do what I did when I couldn't find a job in my home state: MOVE!

BS...My husband and I own a local oilfield trucking company. We have 4 driver positions available and have been trying to fill them for over 6 months. It may not be an engineering job, but our employees have some really good benefits and their pay ain't too shabby either.

I have advertised in all the area newspapers to no avail. There are gobs of truck driver jobs available around here, but no one to fill them.

So don't say there are no jobs for Americans, cause I'll argue with you every minute of the day over that statement.

Yeah, they did.

Then they realized it was cheaper to hire lobbyists to boost nonimmigrant visa quotas and bring in foreign engineers and physicists for ten bucks an hour.

But there are no jobs for us Americans here.

Sure there are - you could become a lawyer, or a politician. I don't think either of those occupations are in danger of being outsourced, offshored, nearshored, downsized, rightsized, or H1B'd any time soon. The rest of us are screwed.

This also may sound naive, but why don't you ask them?

Maybe I'm just jaded because I've been out of work for over three years

Last year the company I worked for began cutting back positions. I wasn't laid off, but my future advancement was bleak with this company. I began sending out my resume. It took me all of a month to find a better paying job in a completely different field. I turned down several offers before, and after I accepted my new position.

Why won't they hire me?

It's hard to say without knowing you better. Speaking as someone who interviews and hires employees it might be a spotty job history, poor interview skills, low education, signs of mental instability, unattractiveness, or a criminal past. Perhaps you forgot to mention you have a hardhat.

If most of these criteria don't match you, then I'd have to guess karma or divine payback. Unemployment is 5.4%. Have you tried asking an employer for a job?
