Submarine issues call for help (Canadian)

A major rescue effort has been launched off Ireland after a Canadian submarine asked for assistance. The Canadian Defence Force said HMCS Chicoutimi had suffered a mechanical failure and its crew were all safe.
A Royal Air Force Nimrod has been diverted to the area and a search and rescue helicopter from the Royal Navy base in Ayrshire is on its way.
The submarine, which was bought from Britain, is not nuclear-powered or carrying nuclear warheads.
The request for assistance came from the vessel some 100 miles north west of Ireland.
Neil Smith, a spokesman for the Faslane submarine base on the Clyde, said that Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessel Wave Knight had been turned round and was on its way to the scene.
A Type 23 frigate, HMS Montrose, is being sent from Faslane, accompanied by tug boat support.
"At this moment in time we don't have the exact details," said Mr Smith.
"We are in communication with the people on board.
"We are doing everything we can to assist them, and at this moment in time my colleagues are working hard to make sure that happens as quickly as possible."

What good is it then?

They probably ran out of gas.
Another embarrassment for the Canadian Armed Forces.

The Canadian Navy subs are normally deployed in the icier nether regions of Canadia to conduct surveillance on illegal whalers, fishers and seal-bashers.
This crew was defecting to Ireland. Rumors of real beer, eh.

As the father of a glowworm-in-training, I offer my prayers for the men on that boat.

These are the old Upholder-class boats from the Royal Navy.
Hopefully, the Canadians got a warranty.

Canadians have subs? Why? They where sold to Canadian government as "self sinking warships" the Canadians found the concept appealing

"A Royal Air Force Nimrod has been diverted to the area..."Is this a type/name of surface vessel or a reference to Canadian military leadership? ;^)

I assume that the ship was on the surface, or was running submerged then surfaced, when the breakdown occured.

The good news is that the perfect diversity of the sensitive but anti-American crew has been maintained and they have completed their basketweaving, sacred First Peoples', "fairies and socialists are good guys" and "Bush is not a nice fellow" drills. The newly elected, non-English speaking doper Captain, in Canada as a political refugee from Mongolia, has already learned that "right" is over that way and "left" is over that way.
