The Canadian Navy subs are normally deployed in the icier nether regions of Canadia to conduct surveillance on illegal whalers, fishers and seal-bashers.

This crew was defecting to Ireland. Rumors of real beer, eh.

They where sold to Canadian government as "self sinking warships" the Canadians found the concept appealing

Well, since the USN has no conventional subs, the find the Canadian subs come in very handy for ASW training. That is the main reason.
