NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
Sat Oct 02 2004 16:42:32 ET

New York-Sixty-one percent of Americans who watched the first presidential debate on September 30 say Sen. John Kerry won; 19 percent say President George W. Bush won and 16 percent say they tied, according to the latest Newsweek Poll which was conducted after the debate ended. Fifty-six percent say Kerry did better than they expected; 11 percent say so for Bush. Thirty-eight percent say Bush did worse than expected;  3 percent say so for Kerry, the poll shows.

The debate erased the lead the Bush/Cheney ticket has held over Kerry/Edwards in the Newsweek Poll since the Republican convention. In a three-way trial heat including Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo, among registered voters Kerry/Edwards leads Bush/Cheney 47 percent v. 45 percent with 2 percent for Nader/Camejo. In a two-way heat, Kerry/Edwards leads 49 percent v. 46 percent for Bush/Cheney, the poll shows.

A 62-percent majority of viewers says Kerry seemed more confident and self-assured (26% say so for Bush) and 51 percent say Kerry had better command of issues and facts (37% for Bush). Forty-seven percent say Kerry seemed more personally likeable (41 % for Bush) and 49 percent say Kerry came closer to reflecting their own views on most foreign policy issues (43% for Bush). The two were nearly even on several other points, including who came across as a strong leader (47% Kerry, 44% Bush) and who had a better plan for dealing with the situation in Iraq (45% for both). Forty percent of viewers thought Kerry was too wordy and 57 percent thought Bush was too repetitive.

Fifty-seven percent of all poll respondents say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time. Bush's job approval rating dropped two points from the Sept. 9-10 Newsweek Poll to 46 percent-a 6-point drop since the poll taken during and after the Republican convention. Forty-eight percent of registered voters polled say they would not like to see Bush re-elected but almost as many (46%) say they would.

How did Newsweek think they could get away with it?

Hear! Hear! And Hear! again. Here.

LOL

We predicted on Thursday that the LameStreamers would declare Kerry an unqualified victor.

That same "take" on FR has been a bit surprising to me, but there shouldn't be nuttin' on this spinning sphere surprising when the lefty operatives are desperate I guess.

You're missing the point; they LIVE to whine; they're not Bush supporters, now or 2000.

I tell you this: I am not going to fight the malcontents on FR that NEVER, EVER supported Bush in 2000 or now -- this time, we are fighting Kerry.

I'm not going to waste my time arguing with a bunch of people who hope Kerry wins.

I have been fighting with trolls for about 3-4 hours over that newsweek article. I bet I have defended W a million times against all the cry babies and whiners. If I didn't know better, I would think this room had been filled with Kerry supporters.

Ha ha ha! So true. These people, like Kerry, Edwards, Kennedy, etc., have no clue about what real, honest, hardworking Americans need, believe or want out of life. And more to the point, they don't CARE. Check out this socialist elitist bleat/bs session, straight from 'the Hamptons' (how droll!).

Newsweek's sample had almost 41% Republicans last time but only 35% this time, and only 31% Democrats last time vs. 37% Democrats this time.

Assuming all republicans would vote for Bush and all democrats would vote for Kerry, had the percentage of republicans and democrats been 41% and 35% in Newsweek's most recent poll, Bush's lead would be 50%-40%. I don't put any stock in any of the polls other than the one on November 2.

That doesn't hold with all of us. I gave up everything I had gathered over a 32 year period as a democrat to join the Republican party. I support my president over that idiot Kerry.

I think that is exactly what has happened. A troll convention has decended at FR. They're hoping to demoralize and de-energize Bush supporters. They're just stupid that way. It can't be done. We're not the over-emotional twits they are, thank God.

We knew the MSM was going to do this before the debates

Why the big surprise? I think the best thing to do is dissect the polls and prominently post and blog the crap out of the MSM lies. By Monday every talk radio show ought to have 1000 copies of the analysis of the various poll biases and distortions. We need to throw cold water on the momentum lie.

It's obvious that criticism of the president's debate performance has been met with very personal, negative responses here. I repeat, it does him a disservice to believe that he cannot do better, or to accept Thursday night as being acceptable. He must do better. Too much depends upon it.

Howlin, I expect Bush to win this election, provided he recovers and does well next Friday.

Bush is like a waiter carrying a tray of full wine glasses across a crowded lawn. He's spilled some of the glasses before, so you just hold your breath hoping he makes it all the way across without spilling the entire tray.

Are any of us nervous about Cheney? Absolutely not.

But, another clunker from Bush on Friday, and Bush will have to fight for his life.

They didn't break me or make me whine and wring my hands. I don't fall for that stuff. I am no longer a Democrat. I know their games.

"In 1980 Carter was leading and lost due to the final debate."

Carter didn't loose because he lost the debates. He lost because he was the worst President in 30 years with double digit interest rates, soaring unemployment, High gas prices with lines, loosing control of Iran and waiting 11 months to even attempt to rescue the hostages held in Iran after the Shah fell and then botching it. etc etc.

Please don't confuse Doom and Gloomers with those of us who are being critical of the president's debate performance because we know he can and must do better.
