NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
Sat Oct 02 2004 16:42:32 ET

New York-Sixty-one percent of Americans who watched the first presidential debate on September 30 say Sen. John Kerry won; 19 percent say President George W. Bush won and 16 percent say they tied, according to the latest Newsweek Poll which was conducted after the debate ended. Fifty-six percent say Kerry did better than they expected; 11 percent say so for Bush. Thirty-eight percent say Bush did worse than expected;  3 percent say so for Kerry, the poll shows.

The debate erased the lead the Bush/Cheney ticket has held over Kerry/Edwards in the Newsweek Poll since the Republican convention. In a three-way trial heat including Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo, among registered voters Kerry/Edwards leads Bush/Cheney 47 percent v. 45 percent with 2 percent for Nader/Camejo. In a two-way heat, Kerry/Edwards leads 49 percent v. 46 percent for Bush/Cheney, the poll shows.

A 62-percent majority of viewers says Kerry seemed more confident and self-assured (26% say so for Bush) and 51 percent say Kerry had better command of issues and facts (37% for Bush). Forty-seven percent say Kerry seemed more personally likeable (41 % for Bush) and 49 percent say Kerry came closer to reflecting their own views on most foreign policy issues (43% for Bush). The two were nearly even on several other points, including who came across as a strong leader (47% Kerry, 44% Bush) and who had a better plan for dealing with the situation in Iraq (45% for both). Forty percent of viewers thought Kerry was too wordy and 57 percent thought Bush was too repetitive.

Fifty-seven percent of all poll respondents say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time. Bush's job approval rating dropped two points from the Sept. 9-10 Newsweek Poll to 46 percent-a 6-point drop since the poll taken during and after the Republican convention. Forty-eight percent of registered voters polled say they would not like to see Bush re-elected but almost as many (46%) say they would.

The Live Thread was brutal. The board was so slow it was impossible to shoot down the Trollish activity and rising hysteria they promoted.

I've come to the conclusion a number of us are going to have no life until the election. LOL If not out stumping for Bush votes or making a living, the rest of the time is going to be spent taking down Trolls.

when I say I wish Jeb won FL in 1994, I am implying that Jeb would be President today instead of GW. Given the choice of the two the GOP would have gone with Jeb. But in 2000 Jeb wasnt ready after only 2 years in office.

I understood that's what you meant . . . I was just saying that whatever plans or possibilities there might be for Jeb to run for Pres. in the future, they're likely dashed if W. loses.

If Jeb had won in 1994, was Pres. now going up against Kerry, the height disparity and articulateness wouldn't be an issue. Plus, Jeb is more attractive (not very difficult to be more attractive than Kerry). I know these are silly things, but there are a number of dolts out there that are swayed by such things.

Nooooooooooo, you misunderstood me. Gross. They would have to turn the lights off for each other, so they can't see. My stomach rolled. I would go celibate first.

I'm just venting. I use freeRepublic for that. For the record I have always believed(sometimes weakly) that Bush will be reelected. My first values are conservative. Bush is now the water carrier for conservative values. I expected him to be more forceful and respond to the many openings Kerry gave him. All this debate made me do was despise Kerry's positions all the more. Some relatives in my family grew up with Cheney and I'll promise yiou this. Cheney won't take this B.S. from edwards. I trust you are right. We need calm and steady nerves to fight this nest few weeks. The only way I know how to fight is to send $50 I really need to the Bush campaign. keep the faith for us timorous ones!

Yeah, what's gone wrong???

I used to go on live threads to get support and comfort and not aid to the enemy and endless hand wringing.

Well, there've always been doom and gloomers and nervous nellies but they were really out in force Thursday nite.

Do we have an infestation of trolls and where is the nest? I want to spray them with bug spray.

I am starting to believe that the strategy includes at least the following:

1. MSM declares Kerry the winner.
2. DNC friendly polls come out showing big turn around.
3. Threads in "Conservative Shrine" (here) start to sound like funeral home due to sudden explosion of posts from "sleeper cell" as there are many influential people that lurk and post here.

Verrry Interrrrrestink.....

"Go for it. I wonder about some of the so called "BUSH" supporters."

---I personally think Bush is better served by honesty than sticking your head in the sand. Honestly pointing out failures and LEARNING something from it not sitting at a computer hoping and wishing.

But. By all means continue to spend your time hurling insults at people who give honest opinions and come Nov 3 you'll be very bitter indeed.

This says it all. As I said in another post, when someone tells you they're going to do something - believe them, especially when past history proves it out.

Faith in seeing anothers ability to handle a dangerous situtation is not putting your head in the sand. It's knowing the right decision was made..and sticking too it... Not "FLIP-FLOPPING" like Kerry.

I just understand the dynamic.

My father was a remarkable man, raising seven kids, CEO of a fabulously successful Leasing Company and being lovingly and heartrendingally stellar through my Mom's torturous demise.

But, he was an "Ah ... bullsh*t" guy who disliked all politicians, saw conspiracies everywhere and trusted no-one in his last years.

That's what I see here. It poisons the group.

4. A few inexperienced FReepers and a few new lurkers become demoralized and discouraged.

But just like the majority in this country who are going to vote a Bush WIN in November, most here aren't taken in. We've seen these same old scare tricks, same old panic modes time and time again.

Nobody likes predictable trolls, LOL!

Comparing this campaign effort of GW to that of his dad in 92 is absurd. But you're new here. Welcome to FR.
