NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
Sat Oct 02 2004 16:42:32 ET

New York-Sixty-one percent of Americans who watched the first presidential debate on September 30 say Sen. John Kerry won; 19 percent say President George W. Bush won and 16 percent say they tied, according to the latest Newsweek Poll which was conducted after the debate ended. Fifty-six percent say Kerry did better than they expected; 11 percent say so for Bush. Thirty-eight percent say Bush did worse than expected;  3 percent say so for Kerry, the poll shows.

The debate erased the lead the Bush/Cheney ticket has held over Kerry/Edwards in the Newsweek Poll since the Republican convention. In a three-way trial heat including Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo, among registered voters Kerry/Edwards leads Bush/Cheney 47 percent v. 45 percent with 2 percent for Nader/Camejo. In a two-way heat, Kerry/Edwards leads 49 percent v. 46 percent for Bush/Cheney, the poll shows.

A 62-percent majority of viewers says Kerry seemed more confident and self-assured (26% say so for Bush) and 51 percent say Kerry had better command of issues and facts (37% for Bush). Forty-seven percent say Kerry seemed more personally likeable (41 % for Bush) and 49 percent say Kerry came closer to reflecting their own views on most foreign policy issues (43% for Bush). The two were nearly even on several other points, including who came across as a strong leader (47% Kerry, 44% Bush) and who had a better plan for dealing with the situation in Iraq (45% for both). Forty percent of viewers thought Kerry was too wordy and 57 percent thought Bush was too repetitive.

Fifty-seven percent of all poll respondents say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time. Bush's job approval rating dropped two points from the Sept. 9-10 Newsweek Poll to 46 percent-a 6-point drop since the poll taken during and after the Republican convention. Forty-eight percent of registered voters polled say they would not like to see Bush re-elected but almost as many (46%) say they would.

I still don't think Democrats are that energized over Kerry. What I am worried about is Republican voters not voting. Conservatives need to make it to the polls. I would really like to know what people are so dissatisfied about.

Thanks for posting those 2000 poll results (Post #16). Helps us keep things in perspective. There's still another month to go!

He alienated his base big time...reneging on tax pledge, signing ADA, heavy handed environment regulations, etc.

After the happenings the last few days I think we have to call Mrs (Baroness) Thatcher and have her perform a multiple backbone transplant on FReepers. : )

Question: Is "Newsweak's" pollster the only one who can't find a significant gender difference?

Are you sure about the makeup of the 9-11 sample? (Link doesn't work) Is there a way to verify it back to source material?

Maybe you posted elsewhere, but because of the 11% change in sample makeup, Kerry should have gone from -6 to +5 in the latest Newsweek poll if no one had changed their minds, BUT HE ONLY WENT UP 2.

This means if Newsweak hadn't cooked the books and had used an identical sample to 9-11, Bush's lead would have GROWN.

To me, this means Bush's lead is STILL growing. No reason to stop working, but I wish the gloon and doomers would mellow out a little.

Newsweek is singlehandedly trying to kill W's momentum. Nice try, no sale.

Yeah, I was there. Reading and weeping. I started out praying for the President, but ended up praying for the posters.

The internals have been exposed and the poll is junk.

Like you, I don't believe the polls will move significantly based on Bush's performance in the first debate - it's still his race to win. However, like many other W supporters, we're wondering what the heck was with the guy Thursday night. There is simply no way one can excuse such behavior when so much is at stake.

Bush represents a position that advocates the projection of US power to further our interests and protect our security. He probably has at least 55% support of the country in this regard.

It is incumbent that he comport himself sufficiently well in order to articulate, defend and advance this proposition. Anything less and he's failing not only himself, but the American people.

O.K. Let's go jump off a cliff. You go first and I'll hold your coat.
1- Did you really expect that Bush's well known "Eloquence" was going to outdo Kerry's fluency in nuanced double speak?
2- Did you expect that the media would report "anything but" a glorious victory for Kerry as a debater?
3- Do you think there is a difference between a beauty/style/poise/swimsuit competition and judging the character of the future President of the US?

Now let's look at the facts:
Bush gave Kerry nothing to talk about but the same old stuff.
HOWEVER KERRY POOPED IN HIS OWN NEST WITH:
1- The "Global test" bit...and 15 variations of "with a little help from my friends".
2- The "No bunker buster bombs for me" fiasco.
3- Give the Mullahs nuclear materials. Hoping that they won't pull a North Korea on us...and we don't need no stinking missile defense.
4- Repeat Clinton's unilateral talks with North Korea that failed so miserably that Kim "the weird" now has half a dozen nukes.

Now I'll grant you Bush should have Bitch-slapped this loser over every point. Bush should have nailed him with Kerry's 20 year record of weakening our defenses and weapons systems, but he didn't.I too, feel frustrated that he didn't do that. But let's keep things in perspective. I don't believe that the dynamics of this race have changed. Bush is still ahead 8-10 points.
Trust me, don't jump Friend.

I hate to say it but I think this poll may be a sign of things to come.

And I think you are right, no matter how much the hordes of others here try to delude themselves. I hate to say it, but this could be the beginning of a trend favoring Kerry. It feels that way to me in my gut, whereas, despite the "glowing" reviews and commentary Kerry got from the MSM after his convention, I didn't feel that sick feeling the way I did watching that debate.

I just don't see how Bush could lose that debate so badly and not have it erode his lead in the polls.

It will/has. And in the coming days I think more polls will bear that out, unfortunately.

My boss is a huge Bush fan, he lent me his copy of "Unfit for Command" and has been convinced that Kerry is unelectable. But after the debate he said he thinks Bush really blew it, and that the fraud Kerry might actually be able to BS his way into the White House. I couldn't disagree with him.

W. did blow a golden opportunity, one that will not come along again. It's going to be tough going from here on it, we may still be able to pull it off, but that's a dang shame when it could have been pretty much a done deal on Friday.
