NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
Sat Oct 02 2004 16:42:32 ET

New York-Sixty-one percent of Americans who watched the first presidential debate on September 30 say Sen. John Kerry won; 19 percent say President George W. Bush won and 16 percent say they tied, according to the latest Newsweek Poll which was conducted after the debate ended. Fifty-six percent say Kerry did better than they expected; 11 percent say so for Bush. Thirty-eight percent say Bush did worse than expected;  3 percent say so for Kerry, the poll shows.

The debate erased the lead the Bush/Cheney ticket has held over Kerry/Edwards in the Newsweek Poll since the Republican convention. In a three-way trial heat including Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo, among registered voters Kerry/Edwards leads Bush/Cheney 47 percent v. 45 percent with 2 percent for Nader/Camejo. In a two-way heat, Kerry/Edwards leads 49 percent v. 46 percent for Bush/Cheney, the poll shows.

A 62-percent majority of viewers says Kerry seemed more confident and self-assured (26% say so for Bush) and 51 percent say Kerry had better command of issues and facts (37% for Bush). Forty-seven percent say Kerry seemed more personally likeable (41 % for Bush) and 49 percent say Kerry came closer to reflecting their own views on most foreign policy issues (43% for Bush). The two were nearly even on several other points, including who came across as a strong leader (47% Kerry, 44% Bush) and who had a better plan for dealing with the situation in Iraq (45% for both). Forty percent of viewers thought Kerry was too wordy and 57 percent thought Bush was too repetitive.

Fifty-seven percent of all poll respondents say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time. Bush's job approval rating dropped two points from the Sept. 9-10 Newsweek Poll to 46 percent-a 6-point drop since the poll taken during and after the Republican convention. Forty-eight percent of registered voters polled say they would not like to see Bush re-elected but almost as many (46%) say they would.

Kerry comitted huge blunders, but the fact that Bush didnt jump on them right then and there means that when the Bush campaign attacks Kerry for Global Test, Iran Nuclear Fuel and No Bunker busters, the public will less likely to listen.

God how I wish Jeb won in 1994!!!!

Bush needs to view Kerry as a bigger threat than Bin Laden. He needs Zell Miller as his debate coach.

Every cloud has a silver lining:

As for who will handle issues better overall, among registered voters Bush leads Kerry 52 to 40 percent on terrorism and homeland security; the situation in Iraq (49% vs. 44%); the situation involving Israel and the Palestinians (46% vs. 39%) and controlling the spread of nuclear weapons (47% v. 43%).

Overall, 62 percent say Bush has strong leadership qualities (compared to 56% who say so for Kerry). Sixty-six percent say Bush says what he believes, not just what people want to hear, compared to 48 percent for Kerry. Sixty- five percent say Bush is personally likeable (63% say so for Kerry).

I want to know the number of Dems and Republicans they surveyed.

Same here. If the sampling is skewed in the other direction, I'll write it off as Newsweek manufacturing momentum for Kerry. If not, I might be concerned. But for now, I'm not worried. I doubt a single debate would trash Bush's lead so quickly, especially when the post-debate polling shows most people's minds *not* changing even though most felt Kerry won.

Does your wife understand what your son signed up for?

Does your wife understand that your son will have a weak-willed, incompetant commander in chief if kerry is elected??

Does your wife understand that George W. Bush LOVES the men and women in the military and has supported them completely??

Does your wife understand that your son will be serving in the cause of FREEDOM and PEACE if he goes to Iraq?

Does your wife understand that what one hears on the STINKING NEWS is not even CLOSE to what's really happening in Iraq??

Have her talk to any number of vets who've been there........and ask why almost every single one of them is voting for President BUSH.

For the sake of your son, Bush HAS to be reelected.

Paul Harvey stated last week that there were 5,500 people killed on the job last year...How does that relate to a war!

I kinda got offended. I threw out 32 years if being a democrat. And all my past hertiage has been one of dems. I am the first that has done it. I got my hubby, one of my sons and 3 of my daughters to switch parties as well.

"I wouldn't want to depend on you in a crisis."

---You know what? I give up. If you people want to live in a fools paradise with your tin-foil hats go right ahead. Just don't bitch n moan to loudly on Nov 3rd when Kerry is President. You people don't want to face the truth and figure out what can be done. No, you'd rather bury your heads in the sand and pretend that 62 million people who watched the debate saw what you did.

This is for you and the rest of the ostriches --Bush debated Kerry's ass off and will win every state in the union. Hope that makes you happy now but you'll be mighty disappointed come Nov 3.

You know what explains the 'overtiredness' of the President?

He spent the day with hurricane victims in Florida.

You need some tinfoil if you think it has anything to do with a conspiracy.

Are there any others, such as myself, that think Bush did very poorly Thursday night but will still prevail in Nov?

Yep, me too. I think Bush came off very poorly in the debate and to try and convince myself otherwise would put me on the same level as the Kerry Koolaid drinkers. Despite that, it's just one debate, most polls haven't shown a big effect from it, and Bush has plenty of time to make a better showing. It's still Bush's race to lose.

If fraud puts Kerry over the top. It is the end of the Union and the beginning of CW2.

Nothing else would explain the over-tiredness and under-preparedness of our President. Well he was helping families of the hurricane all day. I think that he was over prepared by his campaign, basically they told him to play nice to keep the womens vote. Most folks think that the damed thing was a tie, and most folks posting this thread think that there is something to worry about because NEWSWEEK publishs a poll. Good God. Look at the internals of the polls. Go to RCP. Newspeak is trying to make news. Simple. Calm down.
