NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
Sat Oct 02 2004 16:42:32 ET

New York-Sixty-one percent of Americans who watched the first presidential debate on September 30 say Sen. John Kerry won; 19 percent say President George W. Bush won and 16 percent say they tied, according to the latest Newsweek Poll which was conducted after the debate ended. Fifty-six percent say Kerry did better than they expected; 11 percent say so for Bush. Thirty-eight percent say Bush did worse than expected;  3 percent say so for Kerry, the poll shows.

The debate erased the lead the Bush/Cheney ticket has held over Kerry/Edwards in the Newsweek Poll since the Republican convention. In a three-way trial heat including Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo, among registered voters Kerry/Edwards leads Bush/Cheney 47 percent v. 45 percent with 2 percent for Nader/Camejo. In a two-way heat, Kerry/Edwards leads 49 percent v. 46 percent for Bush/Cheney, the poll shows.

A 62-percent majority of viewers says Kerry seemed more confident and self-assured (26% say so for Bush) and 51 percent say Kerry had better command of issues and facts (37% for Bush). Forty-seven percent say Kerry seemed more personally likeable (41 % for Bush) and 49 percent say Kerry came closer to reflecting their own views on most foreign policy issues (43% for Bush). The two were nearly even on several other points, including who came across as a strong leader (47% Kerry, 44% Bush) and who had a better plan for dealing with the situation in Iraq (45% for both). Forty percent of viewers thought Kerry was too wordy and 57 percent thought Bush was too repetitive.

Fifty-seven percent of all poll respondents say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time. Bush's job approval rating dropped two points from the Sept. 9-10 Newsweek Poll to 46 percent-a 6-point drop since the poll taken during and after the Republican convention. Forty-eight percent of registered voters polled say they would not like to see Bush re-elected but almost as many (46%) say they would.

"Amature showing at best .He let 'Kerry LIE..Let him outright lie ..and didnt say crap back to him.."

GW is a gentleman and this dirty fighting is not his forte....but he had better read up on it fast - and use it.

The part that frosts me the most is when the Republicans always have to toss in the 'we honor his service' about sKerry.

I don't see anything honorable about what he did for 4 months in NAM!! Surely nothing to make him a good CIC. He abandoned his crew to come home as fast as he could.

He'll turn tail the same way if he is elected.

The Live Thread was brutal. The board was so slow it was impossible to shoot down the Trollish activity and rising hysteria they promoted.

Yes, it was. I finally gave up posting but it seemed like all the "Spawns of Kerry" were able to post!

I've come to the conclusion a number of us are going to have no life until the election. LOL If not out stumping for Bush votes or making a living, the rest of the time is going to be spent taking down Trolls.

Much to my husband's dismay, he (and I) agree with you. His sock drawer is continually empty :)

I didn't think it was childishness. More like aggravation with the posterings of Kerry and Lehrer and the whole damn stupid media show for the past week. I think he was thinking he had better things to do. It wasn't a real debate and he knew it.

But. By all means continue to spend your time hurling insults at people who give honest opinions and come Nov 3 you'll be very bitter indeed.

Haven't you heard, Jackie Stalone (Sly's mom) is a "psychic" and she said her dog predicts GWB is going to win.

Makes as much sense to me as you being so sure he isn't. :)

"....repeating the same tired lines...."

Oh,boy, isn't that the truth! It worked for awhile, but it is losing its effect!! WHAT IS THE CAMPAIGN DOING? Has he got incompetents around him? Are they the same old tired people from Daddy's regime?

Whoever it is, they are NOT doing a good job. I wonder if W CAN come with something besides the same old rhetoric.

My stepson and nephew are going to Iraq in the next month or so. Please tell your wife what they told us. My stepson told his wife to tell his whole family not to pull the lever for Kerry. My nephew said if he gets killed in Iraq, his wife will still vote for Bush. So if the troops have that much faith in President Bush, she would be letting them down by voting for Kerry.

"...Bush won on substance cause he is right on the issues.."

Correct. However, his delivery was anything but confident and assured that he IS right! He was so dispassionate and seemingly NOT self-assured. He had a defeatist look and demeanor.

LA TIMES POLL SUNDAY: Bush's favorability rating among debate viewers actually improved slightly (although within the survey's margin of error). Before debate, 51% of watchers viewed Bush favorably, 49% unfavorably; after, numbers were 52% and 47%...

Bush was favored in polls to win this debate 2 to 1 and my expectations were even greater.

What poll was that?
