NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
Sat Oct 02 2004 16:42:32 ET

New York-Sixty-one percent of Americans who watched the first presidential debate on September 30 say Sen. John Kerry won; 19 percent say President George W. Bush won and 16 percent say they tied, according to the latest Newsweek Poll which was conducted after the debate ended. Fifty-six percent say Kerry did better than they expected; 11 percent say so for Bush. Thirty-eight percent say Bush did worse than expected;  3 percent say so for Kerry, the poll shows.

The debate erased the lead the Bush/Cheney ticket has held over Kerry/Edwards in the Newsweek Poll since the Republican convention. In a three-way trial heat including Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo, among registered voters Kerry/Edwards leads Bush/Cheney 47 percent v. 45 percent with 2 percent for Nader/Camejo. In a two-way heat, Kerry/Edwards leads 49 percent v. 46 percent for Bush/Cheney, the poll shows.

A 62-percent majority of viewers says Kerry seemed more confident and self-assured (26% say so for Bush) and 51 percent say Kerry had better command of issues and facts (37% for Bush). Forty-seven percent say Kerry seemed more personally likeable (41 % for Bush) and 49 percent say Kerry came closer to reflecting their own views on most foreign policy issues (43% for Bush). The two were nearly even on several other points, including who came across as a strong leader (47% Kerry, 44% Bush) and who had a better plan for dealing with the situation in Iraq (45% for both). Forty percent of viewers thought Kerry was too wordy and 57 percent thought Bush was too repetitive.

Fifty-seven percent of all poll respondents say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time. Bush's job approval rating dropped two points from the Sept. 9-10 Newsweek Poll to 46 percent-a 6-point drop since the poll taken during and after the Republican convention. Forty-eight percent of registered voters polled say they would not like to see Bush re-elected but almost as many (46%) say they would.

Free Republic matters. It's become an influential force in the body politik . Trolls and single issue nutcakes and goofykooks and solid stalwarts and family oriented grammas and Americanl heroes and heroines hang out here. Good stuff. Bad stuff. Exciting stuff!

JimRob and the Mods know that. They give huge latitude to let it all play out, let the fruitcakes and sublime wisemen show their stuff.

That's pretty much why FR is influential. This place is a microcosm of the bigger political milieu. It's going to be ugly. Don't be afraid to get in the OOGLIE freepers faces. It's our obligation.

Great post!
Cnn with all it's left-field spinners have been reporting the same.

The irony... presidential losers win presidential debates.

"Regardless, this is terrible news. The last Newsweek Poll had Bush ahead of Kerry 52-41, so their bias should be the same in both polls. This is bad news."

I read that in the article too but it's a deception. The article is sighting the 11 point lead after the convention but there was a more recent Newsweek poll showing a 6 point lead. Either way it sucks.

No-one-has-said-he-couldn't-do-better.

What we are telling you is that his performance was trumped by substance, and the world did not end Thursday night. Sorry, if you want me to say you are right to focus on Style over substance, you are going to be disappointed. I find it foolish that this argument is STILL occuring when we should all be dissecting Kerry's words and hitting them hard.

Furthermore, critisism has been met with two varied responses.

For trolls and sleepers, it has been met with ridicule.

For legit Bush supporters, it has been hit with a passionate opposing view.

Now I'm going to take my own advice and cease this thread as the Newsweek poll has been debunked, the hysteria subsided, and frankly I'm tired of entertaining the idea style has more weight than substance. These arguments serve no purpose other than to win a "point". If you want G.W. to win, start concentrating on Kerry's words and let The prez's team take care of "performance" concerns.

My wife is not political and has always leaned Dem. She is "sick" at the thought Kerry may get in. She was very concerned today. So, this may be a blessing in disguise. We won't be complacent in the home stretch.

You have to have faith that the American people will not put a man in the White House who uses tan-in-a-can and gets a manicure when the country is at war. One man is visiting people devastated by hurricanes and the other is getting a manicure and his teeth whitened. The American people are smart we just need to have faith and work hard in the stretch.

FGS, snap out of it.

I need to.

Yes I remember the Bush/Gore debates and wasn't always thrilled with Bush, but I don't ever recall feeling like Bush blew it as badly as this one.

Bush was favored in polls to win this debate 2 to 1 and my expectations were even greater.

The idea that Kerry the flip-flopping fraud didn't get nailed on the topic of Iraq, but in fact actually was seen as winning the debate makes me sick.

I really hope the next debates go better for Bush.
Anyway, thanks for the pep talk Howlin.

"Assuming all republicans would vote for Bush and all democrats would vote for Kerry"

Actually I think it was 93% of Republicans for Bush and 87% of Democrats for Kerry. That would only strengthen your conclusion, though)

My favorite comment on the old 2000 thread is someone speculating that Bush was a plant to throw the election.

LOL

I don't disagree that he could have done better .. but with that said .. He didn't do terrible

Remember what Bill Weld said about the 96 debates he had with Kerry

Remember who we are dealing with . Kerry is a master at talking and changing the subject and yet not answering the question

The DNC may have a few looks for their ads .. The RNC have Kerry's own words

GLOBAL TEST .. GIVE IRAN NECLEAR FUEL .. GIVE NORTH KOREA THE KIND OF TALKS THEY WANT

The fools in the media/press and at the DNC think Al Gore lost because of the sighs

Gore lost because of his own words like Locked Box .. I invented the internet .. the movie Love Story

"I think that is exactly what has happened. A troll convention has decended at FR. They're hoping to demoralize and de-energize Bush supporters"

Talk about demoralizing, what about when Kerry alluded to his Vietnam stint? Man if he is able to get away with talking about that in front of a national audience with no rebuke our cause is hopeless. (Tongue in cheek)

I actually kept praying and pleading with the television screen that he just start mentioning Vietnam again and again. That would have been a hoot!

I was on this thread earlier today. Got thoroughly disgusted with the propandists and the ninnies. After going out to dinner I have returned and have better perspective and can laugh at their foolishness.

We've got the numbers of the dems sowing seeds of discontent (it won't work) and the ninnies will eventually concede they were foolish and succumbing to panic.

Yes, Kerry criticized Bush on Kyoto.
Yet Bush somehow forgot to remind hypocrite Kerry that HE HAD VOTED AGAINST Kyoto.

Kerry was talking about following the example of Kennedy and Reagan.
Yet Bush somehow forgot to remind Kerry that he had actually opposed Reagan consistantly on his policies.

Kerry claimed troops were taken from Afghanistan for the Iraq war.
Bush forgot to point out that this was FALSE.

These are just a FEW of the things Bush let Kerry get away with in this so-called debate. It gets me mad everytime I think about it.

UPDATE: Reader Meg Kreikemeier points out that according to RealClearPolitics, Newsweek's most recent poll included 345 Republicans, 364 Democrats and 278 independents. This compares to Newsweek's published data for their most recent prior poll, which showed President Bush with a comfortable lead: 391 Republicans,
300 Democrats and 270 independents. Yes, if you drop 46 Republicans and add 64 Democrats, you will get considerably better results for the Democratic nominee. This is a good reminder of why poll data always need to be taken with a grain of salt, especially until you see the underlying data.
