Just saw the 12:09 picture - lots of grayish smoke / steam, but nothing else.

That was a bulge that blew out the side - that was so nasty.
I'm looking, and this looks like it is coming out the top.
I'm hoping so.
More black and gray clouds coming.
This is sooo cool.
I've never seen this before.

ROFL..the FNC guy asked with amazement "This could go on for DAYS?!!?!?!"

This could go on for months. Even years.

Geologically speaking, so far would this more akin to a burp? Looks like a languid release.

Okay, I'll say it: the timing IS suspicious...

I still have a cup of ash that I scooped up from Interstate 5 in Washington State about 100 miles from the Volcano. Car wash operators are going to have a very nice month up there. This ash gets everywhere.

The depth of the quakes is quite shallow now as well...whatever she's going to do, it's going to happen soon.

Mt. Saint Helens is reacting to the debates last night. Mother nature couldn't take Kerry's performance.

12:14 picture - steam/smoke cloud is definitely bigger, and spreading...

Watching on tv. "Low rumbling beginning to be heard. Erratic winds around the mountain, plume not going anywhere in particular yet."

USGS spokesman: "Apparently emanating from cracked glacier on SE side of lava dome. A steam driven explosion. No indication of hot magma, we anticipate future events like what we're seeing right now."

Visually, it does not look too big, actually rather beautiful.

Re: FNC:They have to pull away from a closeup to keep all their graphics/alert headlines on the bottom third of the screen and still see the volcano.

Yeah. However, it's pretty similar to the initial 1980 eruptions in March...there were dozens like it in March and April 1980.

Not that that means that you'll inevitably have a catacylsmic eruption down the road.

I grew up in the Seattle area, but I was in LA during the 1980 eruption, so this is the first time experience for me too. The good news for me, so far, is that the wind is blowing the ash cloud to the west, so it's going away from me. (for now)

I live in The Dalles and I'll be keeping an eye out to the west to see the cloud appearing above the horizon. It's a beautiful clear day so it should be easy to spot once it gets high enough.
