Watching on tv. "Low rumbling beginning to be heard. Erratic winds around the mountain, plume not going anywhere in particular yet."

USGS spokesman: "Apparently emanating from cracked glacier on SE side of lava dome. A steam driven explosion. No indication of hot magma, we anticipate future events like what we're seeing right now."

Visually, it does not look too big, actually rather beautiful.

USGS rep: "I'd call this a slow explosion. You get water in contact with old hot rock, you get steam explosions like you see here."
