PRINCETON, NJ -- John Kerry won the debate Thursday night, 53% to 37%, according to a random sample of 615 registered voters who watched the event. Almost half of the viewers said they felt more favorable about the senator because of the debate, and 60% said Kerry expressed himself more clearly than did President Bush.

However, viewers did not change their minds about who would do a better job in Iraq or better serve as the country's military leader.

Prior to the debate, viewers chose Bush over Kerry in handling the Iraq war by 54% to 40%. After the debate, the comparable figures were essentially unchanged, 54% to 43%.

Bush has his base tied up. The voters not voting for him are touchy, feely, emotional types that are voting against Bush rather than for him. For Bush to get these votes he must shed his shoot from the hip, gun them all down persona. +

Bush isn't going to lose those who support his stand in Iraq but Kerry can lose those who are voting against Bush. In other words, he wins by losing.

"In a debate, normally winning is based on the persuasive logic of someone's thoughts."

Exactly. Kerry did not demonstrate that he could do a better job. He merely criticized Pres. Bush and claimed he could do better. "Saying it does not make it so."

An unsubstantiated claim, no matter how "smoothly" delivered, does NOT win the point or the debate.

20 years ago, Kerry would have a double diget lead after such a good "showing" last night.

Actually, 20 years ago Mondale creamed an unprepared and confused Ronald Reagan in the first debate and he only lost 49 states.

Here's the link to Betsy's Page. FR in it's infinite wisdom has once again relegated bloggers to the back row even though they broke the biggest story of the year. Post all the MSM crap that you want on the boards, but let's put the bloggers at the back of the bus. STUPID!! http://betsyspage.blogspot.com/

I don't think Scary Kerry won at all! I thought my President mopped the floor with him. Kerry was pulling stuff from his rear-end and was not at all with the subject at hand.

Kerry had his own agenda and was going to make his points regardless of the questions that were asked.

IMHO

Good post and welcome to FR!

Someone on another thread said it well last night....

When speaking - kerry lies better than President Bush tells the truth.

So, Kerry expressed himself better but people still don't seem to be buying it.

It's kind of like watching an actor in a movie. That's all he's doing and all he would do...act like he'd lead the nation...a figure-head...the perfect puppet.

Thanks, and yes. Kerry did not "win" the debate even tho' he was a better speaker (to those who are not offended by professionally-delivered lies and nonsense, as I am).

The debate includes content and delivery and overall, people are not persuaded by Kerry's glib "I can do better than this failed President."

...My take is: Kerry is great debater - so what? ...

It's easy to be a great debater when you don't have to be bothered with the truth, or the consequences of your actions.

The debates were boring. Nothing new. Bush wins because nothing changed.
