El Camino Real to become historic trail

By The Associated Press

Overcoming private property concerns, Congress has passed legislation that would designate El Camino Real de los Tejas, which stretches from the Rio Grande near Eagle Pass, Texas, to Natchitoches, La., as a National Historic Trail.

El Camino Real was a corridor of trails used by settlers, immigrants, Indians and the military.

The trail is a combination of routes totaling almost 2,600 miles.

It also served as a path for such Texas heroes as Davy Crockett and Sam Houston, who fought for Texas independence from Mexico.

"This legislation grants the legendary trail the status it deserves and secures the rights of private property owners," Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, who led a three-year effort to pass the bill, said Tuesday. "It will also help the surrounding communities attract more tourism and boost the region's economy."

Hutchison wrote the legislation to give landowners the right to opt in or opt out of those portions of the trail that are not public property.

The U.S. Senate passed the bill earlier this month and it cleared the House of Representatives on Tuesday. It must be signed by President Bush before it becomes law.

And all this time I thought El Camino Real referred to a highway in California.

How do you pronounce Natchitoches?

Most of the trail in Texas is named OSR (old Spanish road).

El Paso Texas to Santa Fé New Mexico is also know as El Camino Real. "El Camino Real" means The Royal Road. (There isn't one to Geometry, however.)

"El Camino Real" means "The Kings Highway" if my Early California history is still seared in my memory correctly. I never knew of the highway in Texas, but as Junipero Serra's "Highway of the Missions" in California.

"Natch ih toe chess"

wrong

It is" nak e dish "

It is the oldest town in Louisiana. It was a port on the Red River. The river changed course and left the town without a port.

Yours is better than mine in 15.
I had a crew there in the seventies and mangled the name.

I got a laugh from some lugger captains for calling Gueydan
GU ey dan.
