I was having an argument with another FReeper about how many of the old timers were still around. I tell people there is a FReeper vsyndrome and that most of them are still around, they just don't post much anymore.

I'm thinking back to that Friday night... October 30, 1998... the lobby of the Howard Johnson hotel (right across from the Watergate!) where old friends met for the first time.

It was different back then, not better just different. People weren't preening because they knew they had and audience of thousands, they spoke from the heart and genuinely wanted to educate.

"I posted this thread because over the years I have had several arguments with people about how the oldtimers have left. I tell them they haven't (I still get the occasional email/FReepmail from many of them), that there is a pathology about FReeping, from lurking, to registration, to posting, to flaming and finally to anonymity. The fact is, after a period of time, everyone acquires a number of "detractors" and once one has said all they want to say, they just sit back, read, learn and let the new kids on the block have some fun.

Okay, now I understand your intention, but must respectfully disagree. As one of the earliest critics of FR activities, I've seen many leave to due FR leaving them and not the reverse.

That said, I have ALWAYS maintained that this is one man's soapbox and deal with it how they may. I, amongest others, have left on occassion. Some have come back, some have lurked, and some have completely walked away...some were welcomed to take their leave, others are sorely missed for their contrarian views which added to the discussion.

Whatever the reason for leaving or being dismissed, this forum has, without a doubt, been influential in the political process and furthering alternative media. Long live FR and the Internet.

Antis, eat your heart out, and don't bother to copy my words to your Cave because you are too cowardly to let me respond on your latest forum, as evidenced by your continuel bannings.
