Winsome Sears / Bobby Scott debate
vanity | 21 September 2004 | R. Scott

Posted on 09/21/2004 3:24:31 AM PDT by R. Scott

I made it to the debate last night, although I couldn’t stay for the entire affair. I was surprised to see the turnout. It was standing room only. Another surprise was the number of young people. I was not surprised by the large number of Scott campaign workers. He’s been in power for a long time.
Scott opened with a typical mindless democratic party script. He’s for better health care, decries the debt, blah, blah. He even came with charts – one of which showed what our National debt would be in 2040 if spending remains as is! He projected 35 years ahead!
Winsome Sears spoke second, and she is either extremely quick or had an advanced copy of Scott’s script. She immediately shot down every one of Scott’s claims about how great he is – and his voting record. I left after the opening remarks, but that was enough to convince me that our district needs Sears. I commented to one of her people as I left that she won me over by not making a lot of empty campaign promises and more importantly by not insulting my intelligence. She made notes on my comments and said she’d pass them on.

"Winsome Sears"

That's a wonderful name! It's like something an American Charles Dickens would come up with.

I do like "Winsome" – “sweetly attractive, charming” – and the name fits. She also comes over as very intelligent.

It must be difficult when you are burdened with talking points from the DNC, the Black Caucus and international socialism, to deal with actual intelligence from some one who is well informed and can think and speak on her feet. We wonder if the voters will care or will they continue to be sheeple on the old plantation?

Sear did have a lot of support last night – even though Bobby Scott did bring a large cheering section. I think she may have converted some just with her opening remarks. I was setting beside a young couple (very early 20’s) who appeared to be Scott supporters. When he came to his projection of the budget deficit for the year 2040 based on current spending they both seemed to be shocked – until I asked how does he expect the spending to remain the same for the next 35 years. They then thought about the other BS he was shoveling.
Some of the Scott supporters were looking a bit worried after the opening statements.

Winsome Sears is the face of the new Black political stance. She probably won't win this time, but she is a wonderfully strong and attractive candidate who won't be denied forever. bobby scott, watch your back and don't look back because somethin ( someone) may be gaining on you!

This is the first time he has had a serious challenger – and he’s been there for 27 years. It’s something brand new for him.
If he does make it back this year – watch out next time!

Here is another report of the debate that was posted on the Virginia Message Board today:

Sears Scores Slam-Dunk at Debate
Posted by jgbarber 9/22/04 6:55am

Monday's debate at The Dwelling Place in Newport News between Bobby Scott and Winsome Sears can be counted as a victory for underdog Winsome Sears. A sharp Sears had the career politician Bobby Scott on his heels most of the night.

After both candidates took a non-negative political campaign pledge, Bobby Scott accused Mrs. Sears of negative campaigning when she tried to highlight Mr. Scott's voting record. Mrs. Sears responded with, "It's your voting record, I'm just letting the people know how you voted."

Winsome Sears asked why her opponent supported gay marriage, abortion for minors and partial-birth abortion while voting against better education and balancing the budget.

At one point in the debate, Scott implied that homosexual marriage was a civil rights issue. Many in the audience questioned how the color of one's skin or a person’s gender was the same as someone choosing to be gay. God made us equal but he also made us either a man or a woman.

Scott also side-stepped the abortion issue by simply saying, “I support Roe vs. Wade.” He refused to answer questions about minors having abortions or the bigger question of partial-birth abortion.

Side-stepping the issue was a popular strategy for the incumbent Bobby Scott. On issue after issue, he side-stepped questions concerning his voting record and instead attacked the Bush administration. He rarely challenged Mrs. Sears or her issues but instead turned his attention to what was going on in Washington.

Thanks for the update.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for her. I am not in her district but she would be a good representative for all Virginians.

I heard Mrs. Sears tell a caller on a radio show to forget Democrat and Republican labels and start thinking in terms of right and wrong.

I love that woman.
