It appears to be about time to accept the collateral damage and let Ala do the sorting.

Iraq Militants Claim to Hold 10 Hostages

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) -- A militant group in Iraq claimed it is holding 10 hostages working for an American-Turkish company in a tape broadcast by the Arabic television station Al-Jazeera Saturday.

The previously unknown group, calling itself the "Salafist Brigades of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq," gave an ultimatum of three days for the company to leave Iraq or it will kill the 10 hostages, the station's presenter said.

The Al-Jazeera presenter said the station received a copy of the tape but did not say how. The group identified the company as an American-Turkish firm operating in Iraq, but did not give a name.

The station only aired a clip showing the 10 hostages, sitting under the banner of the group. The group didn't say what were the nationalities of the hostages, or where they were captured.

About 120 foreigners have been kidnapped in Iraq, and many have been killed by their captors. Insurgents have carried out most of the kidnappings in a bid to drive foreign companies out of Iraq and thwart the U.S.-led reconstruction of the country.

Franks said that “the worst thing that could happen” is if terrorists acquire and then use a biological, chemical or nuclear weapon that inflicts heavy casualties

Gee, what are the chances that a bunch of subhuman maniacs whose very religion glorifies suicide bombing and whose sole purpose in life is to exterminate Jews and Christians will get their hands on nuclear or biological weapon and use it to inflict not just 3,000 casualties in America in about an hour but 500,000?

I'd say it is a certainty that this will happen here in the next 20 years.

When that happens, what Franks says will happen is a sure bet.

What happens when the enemy is undistinguishable from the civilian, and you continue to take casualties but cannot retaliate for fear of killing the innocent?

What happens is that you have no choice but to wipe out or at a minmum decimate the populations of the offending countries.

You jail all of the leftists, treasonous Democrats, and Islamonazi symps, take the same weapon of mass destruction that was used against your population, and go over and take out the middle east.

3-5 million dead ragheads.

Outlaw Islam to boot.

Too bad it can't just be done now, but apparently we'll have to lose about half a million on our side first before it becomes politically acceptable.

But make no mistake about it, this WILL happen within the next 20 years.

Tragic. I have no idea what to do but cross my fingers for the hostis. How many underground groups do they have in Iraq? I guess I've heard two dozen different names by now.

It's almost like in "Life of Brian" where they sit in the Collosseum and every group of a handfull of people made up its own underground group.

If I was working in Iraq, I would be packing so much heat that my feet would leave impressions in the asphalt when I walked across a road.

Don't bring a knife to a gunfight.

Do it the Chicago way.

They kidnap 10 of yours, you kill 100 of theirs.

They cut off heads, you cut off genitals and send them to paradise lacking the means to enjoy those 72 virgins.

I hope we get even starting Nov 3 or take off and nuke the place from orbit.

We had another car-bombing of people lined up to join the Iraq National Guard. This is like the 10th time. How hard is this to stop?

Put up a concrete walled sectioned area for them to line up in that you cannot get a car into. The first section you let them all into to line up after a cursory inspection, no bags, no bulky clothing allowed at all...the worst you can get then is maybe a suicide bomber to take out a few. Then you let them into the next section after a thorough check.

You can't stop everything, but you can easily stop someone blowing up a car-bomb and killing and wounding scores at a time.

Why does this continue to occur.

You forgot the most important thing.
Smear plenty of lard (or any pork product) on their bodies.

Agreed. I read the post re Black Jack Pershing's clear and concise way of dealing with Muslim terrorism. I believe the last line of the story said that not a peep was heard from them (TROP) for 40 years. Works for me!

In WW2, Japan took to capturing, torturing, and killing civilian construction workers working to build infrastructure. That gave rise to the Navy SeaBees - who both built and fought.

We may have to institute such measures in Iraq. If so, we'll still win, but it may take a bit longer.

Why aren't these people armed to the teeth to prevent such happenings ????

The kidnappers will only stop when it costs, them and the populace they hide among, more than they are willing to pay.

What that price is, if indeed there is one, and how to exact it has not yet been determined.

Any practical suggestions?

It all comes down to the equilibrium of violence. The terrorists probe the boundaries of the current situation and push further what is acceptable without provoking qualitatively different response. Admit it, televised beheadings and massacres of hundreds of small children were unthinkable not so long ago. Now this is the daily dose (of terror). Your scenario can be prevented only by becoming exceedingly ruthless and responding even to the "minor" terrorist outrages with utmost severity, effectively pushing the equilibrium the other way

Yes, and a serious campaign to delegitimize the terrorist ideology - the militant Islam - should be started. The solution is to force Islam to reform world-wide. But this can only be achieved by putting pressure on the "moderate" muslims, not pandering to them!

They aren't armed to the teeth because their contracts don't allow it. I know for instance the KBR drivers were unarmed when I was there.
