~10:41pm~ EST JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH ABILENE KINKOS: Bill Burkett has a standing account with the Kinkos in Abilene Texas, and while the lady who answered the phone would not be more specific she did say Burkett was in there last week - she waited on him on last (a week ago) Tuesday....

I'm pretty certain that the speculation about being copied multiple times the degrade the quality is bogus. Print something on a cheap inkjet printer and fax it and you will get plenty of degradation. I think at least one of the documents, if not all, were crumpled to cause irregularities. Maybe that was deliberate, but judging from the lack of intelligence displayed in the details, I doubt it.
Site has "Bull for Sale" by Bill Burkett of Baird, TX (Oh, the Irony--ROFLMPO!)
Thanks for the ping.
Well crap...
All this excitement at the Kinkos and I just live a few blocks away from it. As a matter of fact I regularly make copies there.
They have a stand alone fax machine....not sure of the make or model though.
It's all over the local news today, they seem to think Burkett is the guy. They even quoted him from what I assume was one of our local democratic meetings ranting about Bush's Nat'l Guard record. If he's not the guy, I'd be surprised.
Any development's from Cox's call to start a congressional investigation. I would suggest contacting whoever is involved in that and supeona those computers and search the raw harddrive data for the words in the docs.
BTW - I wouldn't be surprised if he typed them up at Kinkos... He could have typed them up elsewhere and just faxed them there hoping for some anonymity. But he could have just as easily decided he didn't want the digital evidence on his own computers and used kinkos for that reason. Also, what are the chances he owns a copy of Adobe Distiller. I would think there was a good chance he at least printed them to PDF at kinkos. Anyone know if PDF files have any meta-data or anything like that?
I have no doubt he did the faxing, and he has the motive and opportunity. The problem I have is believing he is Rather's unimpeachable source.
I mean, would FOX describe one of FR's firebreathers unimpeachable? I have no problem with people being partisan, but I can't believe CBS would stake it's reputation on one man who's been in a mental hospital.
There's someone out there besides Burkett.
Casually visit Kinko's asap.... check on the fax make and model, look up outgoing numbers print out mode, print out said numbers, compare to c-bs fax number elsewhere in thread... e-mail drudge, ann coulter, hannity, etc... whatever you do, don't live up to your screen name!
"There's someone out there besides Burkett."
I'm afraid they simply felt safe from scrutiny. They based their reputations on a man who said computers and laser printers were not capable of producing a lower case "L". The fact is they have gotten away with this type of stuff for so long they are not even carefull any more.
Dan Rather from the NY Observer story:
He did not reveal the name of the source, but Mr. Rather said he was a man who had been reluctant to come forth with them because hed been harassed by political operatives. "Whether one believes it or not, this person believed that he and his family had been harassed and even threatened,"
And from today's NY Times:
In a book published this year, "Bush's War for Re-election" by James Moore, Mr. Burkett is quoted as reporting having received numerous death threats, including telephone messages and a bullet with his name on it that he says he found in his mailbox. More recently, he told people that his son's car had been burned.
Thanks for the ping!
Not to mention the black helicopters that keep circling his house on the nights when he's not being probed by aliens.
If forging US Government documents is a Federal Offence, is it possible for any member of the public to make a complaint to start investigation?
Is it also possible for a member of the public to bring such a complaint direct to court? In the UK we call them "private prosecutions", that's when the the local prosecutor won't pursue it, a member of the public has a right to bring his own charge.
Is it possible to bring a class action against the purveyor of a libel?
Lastly, does the DA in Abilene want to make a name for himself.
Thanks for the ping.
Translation; assisted the Demoncratic party in a failed election heist.
Cordially,
Keep me on your ping list. This is too good to be missed. Thanks.
Misty, where did you read that?
thanks
As another add. to what has already been said, Unless the drives were pulverized into dust, the data can still be retrieved. No matter how many times its been formated, even if you use those so called "Shredder" programs for computers.:)
Obviously CBS already knew where the documents originated and from whom, so they had no reason to call. My question about media sources being too lazy to make a phone call applies to other media sources. Why didn't ABC/NBC, Fox News, Matt Drudge or the Washington Post bother to call Kinkos?
I believe the pdf files were created at CBS from hard copies.
