The short answer to your excellent questions is that, in some ways, the laws that would cover a case like this in the U.S. are much less just that the onese in the U.K. For all practical purposes, there are no effective libel laws that protect "public" persons, and the average individual has no idea how easy it is to become a "public" person under the relevant laws.
