That's what we heard to. Hearing about flights in the air w/no commo is disturbing.

My friends and I noticed extraneous exclamation points in our emails today that were moving from place to place as we replied to the same email. Also the NOAA satellite pix of IVAN got very fuzzy about 6 pm. I had a fleeting thought of sunspots or a computer virus. FWIW, I am as far east as Indiana, just further south, and I hear the airplanes either taking off or landing at Nashville International in what seems to be a normal pattern for this time of night.

The outage occurred at 4:40 p.m. PDT at the Los Angeles Air Route Traffic Control Center in Palmdale, in the desert north of Los Angeles
I'm a pilot for a major US airline. What is going on is this: "LA Center" had a power failure and that has an effect on all traffic in LA Center's airspace. They are likely working on backup, which means aircraft that are in the air and landing at an airport in LA Center airspace will likely be able to continue to their destination without too great a delay. Aircraft on the ground will not be allowed to takeoff until the issue is resolved.
LA Center's airspace goes from the Mexico board north to just north of Santa Barbara. It goes from off the Pacific coast east to near the Arizona border.
This is not that unusual.

I was calm and with you until you got to your last line, "This is not that unusual." Now I am worried.

I had no idea how big of an area is serviced by these communication centers. Thank you for your insight!
However, seeing your last line about this not being unusual gives me the heebie jeebies. You must have nerves of steel to be a pilot : )
