VANITY: Do faxes still show the phone...
Self | 09/14/04 | Self

Posted on 09/14/2004 10:39:12 AM PDT by Budge

I have a question.

I was watching Fox & Friends this morning and noticed at least two zoom shots of the forged memos.

I tried to see if there was an originating phone number on top/left.

Now my question(s): 1) Do fax machines still print this information on any/all pages?

2) Has anyone tried to see if there is such a thing on these forgeries?

3)Does anyone have a screen capture of the FULL document, including the header, and if so would you post it here please?

I no longer have or have access to a fax machine.

depends on the fax machine. You don't have to program the fax # in.

Plus it could have been on there and removed after a few passes.

I was able to get close to the same effect with a couple stock photoshop filters. If I had time to run it through a bad copier several times, I could have nailed it even better.

You can turn it on or off, and it depends also, on the program, if generated from a PC.

Only if you program them to do so. It's not automatic.

It is true that the faxer can turn the number display on or off, but Federal laws say it must be transmitted:

"The Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991, 47 U.S.C. § 227... and the rules of the Federal Trade Commission require that any message sent to a fax machine must clearly mark on the first page or on each page of the message:

*the date and time the transmission is sent;
*the identity of the sender; and
*the telephone number of the sender or of the sending fax machine.

All fax machines manufactured on or after December 20, 1992 and all facsimile modem boards manufactured on or after December 13, 1995 must have the capability to clearly mark such identifying information on the first page or on each page of the transmission."

So you can add this to the crimes committed by the document forger. Oh, maybe the fax machine was also manufactured in 1972 -- then this law does not apply. : )

Per the user manual of my office fax...

" The telephone consumer protection act of 1991 makes it unlawful for any person tom use a computer or electronic device to send any message via a telephone fax machine unless such messages clearly contain the date and time it is sent and an identification of the business of other entity or other individual sending the message and the telephone number of the sending machine or such business, other entity, or individual"

hmmmmmmmm

My machine will generate a report of ALL incoming faxes for the time period I specify showing the originating fax number. Maybe that could be done on the machine that received the info.

Perhaps the Feds should suspect SeeBS of a crime and get a search warrant for all of their fax machines.

I certainly wasn't aware of that regulation.

When I saw those zoom shots this morning, I know I saw something top left, but the zoom was too quick to catch what. I did catch something about CBS News(?) top center.

Don't be so sure. Here is the first place I bookmarked them. It says CBS on the top.

Maybe that WAS on these 'documents.'

That is why I'd love to see a screen capture.

OK, tell me this. At the very top of that page you linked to is this;

09/07/2664 69:51 12129751998 CBS NEWS PAGE 01

NOw, is the "12129751998" possibly a phone number?

If so, is area code 212 the DC area?

That should mean that it originated from a CBS fax machine.
