Device dropped in ocean off Georgia during Cold War WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Government experts are investigating a claim that an unarmed nuclear bomb, lost off the Georgia coast at the height of the Cold War, might have been found, an Air Force spokesman said Monday.
The hydrogen bomb was lost in the Atlantic Ocean in 1958 following a collision of a B-47 bomber and an F-86 fighter.
A group led by retired Air Force Lt. Col. Derek Duke of Statesboro, Georgia, said in July that it had found a large object underwater near Savannah that was emitting high levels of radioactivity, according to an Associated Press report.

In Savannah here. I have heard this story all my life, and, have gone swimming in the area. I have yet to see any mutants swimming around or even glowing in the dark.

USAF RECOMMENDS LEAVING SAVANNAH BOMB UNDISTURBED
7/11/2001 - WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today the U.S. Air Force announced its recommendation to leave undisturbed the unarmed bomb jettisoned off the coast of Savannah, Georgia in February 1958. The bomb will remain categorized as irretrievably lost.
Air Force officials consulted the U.S. Navy, the Department of Energy (DOE), and the Savannah District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to investigate the details surrounding the incident, the current condition of the bomb and associated hazards. Each agency studied these areas independently. It is the collective opinion of all four agencies that it is best to leave the bomb undisturbed.
Since there was no nuclear capsule on board the aircraft there is no possibility of a nuclear explosion. The findings also determined that if left undisturbed, the explosives in the bomb are not hazardous to the public. However, the explosives could pose a serious hazard to recovery personnel and the environment if disturbed by a recovery attempt.
Additionally, the Air Force is concerned that the destructive nature of the search and recovery operation would cause unacceptable short and long-term environmental damage to the area and could cause irreparable damage to the Floridian aquifer, which provides drinking water to the region.

I hope they did find it -- I've heard this story since I moved to Georgia ten years ago. Even if it's inert, they need to get that thing outta there.

Based on the fact I have seen pictures of terrorist assholes burning the American flag, I would think that may be a urban legend.
Because that was the coordinates we have had for years as a 'broken arrow'.
We have had only NOW to retrieve it since it has shown up in terrorist communications.
