Howlin started a Live Thread September 10, 2004 to see what Dan would say. He told us his report was the facts and nothing but the facts.

Well, it is now Monday, the 13th. What will Dan say today?

If that's what he said, he's incorrect. Microsoft Office 2000, XP, and 2003 all have auto-superscript enabled by default. If you type "187th" and hit space, the "th" will automatically superscript BY DEFAULT.

Office 97, too.

CA....

Very nice illustration!

Also, in the word "I'll" the apostrophe is curled.

I have heard that did not exist on 70s era typewriters.

I've tested every version of Word since 97 running under Windows 98 and Windows XP. While Word 97 will superscript, the document can only be reproduced precisely by the default settings (margins, fonts, etc.) of Word 2000 and above.

I found the following on an Alabama Air National Guard site:

The roots of the 187th Fighter Wing dates back to 1952 when the Alabama Air National Guard orgainzed the 160th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron in Birmingham, Alabama equipped with the RF-51 Mustang. The squadron moved to Montgomery Regional Airport (Dannelly Field) on January 1, 1953, and entered the jet age with the arrival of the RF-80 in 1955. Within a year the 160th transitioned to the RF-84 Thunderflash aircraft, which served as the squadron's primary aircraft for the next 15 years.

The squadron was mobilitzed during the Berlin Crisis in 1961-1962. In August 1962, the squadron returned to normal peacetime status and was reorganized. It was then officially designated the 187th Reconnaissance Group. In 1971, the Thunderflash was replaced by the Phantom II, which was flown for 17 years. From 1971-1982, the group remained in the reconnaissance role flying the RF-4C. The 187th won many honors during this timeframe, including the best reconnaissance unit int he nation in the Photo Finish "81" competition.

So, it looks like the 187th (no superscript) was transitioning to F-4's when Bush served there. You don't just pop out of an F-102 and jump into an F-4, unless you are suicidal.

Bush is now on the defensive

$$$$

No, he isn't! He is making campaign appearances, White House appearances, Rose Garden appearances, doing the work of the Chief Executive and candidate effectively.

I just sent a FAX to Andrew Heyward, the President of CBS News. In the WORD document that I generated, I used the number 1 in every case where a lower case l should appear, and I underlined them, just in case he couldn't find them.

You can do the same at:

Andrew Heyward
President, CBS News
FAX 212-975-1893

I dont recall. There certainly may have been an incident before the 2000 election. I am coming up dry when I try to plumb the depths of my Dan Rather memory well. LOL! I confess I havent granted him very much room in my synapse circuits!

Ah! I never realized. COMPLETELY forgot about his magical powers. That's how he invented the internet, too, right?

Could a lowercase L have been used, but with a space between each L, and a space between the last L and the "th"?

Dan Rather may be dumb but he may be laughing all the way to a Kerry win in November. Don't forget Dan has a comparatively huge audience who think he’s a god.
